Hey all!

So basically, I have bothered to really dabble in the ways of 'Combat RP' but I really want to get into it for FFXIV as the events I have observed and the little bits my FC has been showing me are quite fun.

However, I am still intimidated by RP it in events such as the Grindstone. So I was wondering if someone could possibly give Elza a few pointers? (basically combat RP with Elza in training so I can get some tips of action writing, how the tournament goes and rules and etc. Â

But also, the Grindstone is very beginner-friendly! I say this as someone who helped someone have her first Grindstone match ever the last weekend! (Made it to 4th round too. RNG gods favored her).

If we're talking basic Grindstone Rules-ish combat, here's a general flow.

Players A and B are matched!

A and B will roll initiative to see who will go first. (Previously, we used rolz.org, but /random is the more common one now)

A> /random -> 956
B> /random -> 129

------

A is going first!

A will then type up a block of text for an action. Some people like to roll first and see if they immediately fail. Others will use non-assuming language with "tries", "attempts", etc to make an attack.

A> /random -> 5
B> /random -> 500

B has properly defended the attack!

B will then type up a block/dodge/however they want to handle defending. Then, B will write up an attack and roll.

B> /random -> 999
A> /random -> 0

B's attack landed!

A will then write up how that damage has taken affect. Maybe it was sand in A's eyes. Or A got stabbed. Perhaps now that B is so close, A is going to counter-attack with a punch!

This repeats until A or B has taken 3 "hits" of damage. ...but not all "attacks" need to be from a weapon/spell. Perhaps A pushed B onto the ground. Then B tripped A. Still valid hits!

I can lay out the rules of the Grindstone if you were interested!

Participating is pretty simple: Be in the line that forms before 10PM EST out in Central Thanalan. There's no sign ups or anything, and just being in the line will get you paired up with someone.

All of the combat is decided with /random, using the following series of actions:

Opponents roll initiative before starting (only at the beginning of a match!)
The person who wins initiative emotes their attack
Attacker rolls /random after posting
Defender rolls /random to determine if they successfully block of evade the attack
Defender emotes the result
Switch sides and repeat until someone is hit 3 times

The 3 hits "rule" is just a suggestion: Some people prefer to surrender after being tagged three times but that's not actually a rule. The OOC meta is that the third hit just so happens to always be the one that ends the fight by resulting in a KO, surrender or something otherwise dramatic to end the battle. The winner gets healed and moves on to fight another person, and we do this until there's only one person left standing.

I'm a bit of a rare sight for RP these days but Warren's always open to helping people get their feet under them with a sword and shield. You could probably also find someone at the Grindstone itself willing to teach you how to swing something!

Â That definitely makes sense in terms of the Grindstone! I like how the random works. That really makes it fair, cause I was always worried about someone not taking any hits cause they want to win kinda deal so that makes me really happy. Smile

And I will let you know if I catch you in game Unarmed Mercenary!Â

And thank you for the offer Rixho! I was actually trying to steer away from archery only because for my skills in writing action I feel it would be the hardest for me and action writing is already somewhere I struggle in. HOWEVER Elza is a great Conjurer, but has no strength. So she must find an agile and dexterous weapon and the bow would probably be the best fit. So I will let you know what she ends up choosing to use. Smile

I'm a huge fan of the grindstone/combat events, but do not participate in them for IC reasons, so my knowledge is somewhat limited. The advice above on grindstone mechanics, however, is great and widely used for similar combat RP styles. Â

I'd offer up Sig as a potential teacher, but he'd be absolutely terrible at the role for several reasons. However, if you ever want to work on action writing or combat style posts, let me know, I'd be happy to provide input in-game. Â I usually RP a more atmospheric, gritty style of RP combat that emphasizes emotion and environment; the combat is usually short in terms of number of actions, violent, and brutal. Â The largest piece of advice is to incorporate your surroundings and other players into a potential post, as it often makes the scene more interesting. Â Let me give you an example:

Sigurd's fingers clenched the poor hilt like a vice, wrists twisting upwards to direct the great sword that extended from the hilt outward at waist level in a guarded, defensive posture. Â His feet maintained a wide stance for both mobility and support, boots brushing over the occasional blade of grass that billowed up from the dry soils. Â Beads of sweat rolled down his brow under the searing desert sun, platinum locks pasted against his forehead - cobalt eyes unflinching in their calculated assessment of the mark, no matter how much the rays bit down. He studied her light armament carefully, taking note of the tiny daggers clutched between her fingers, predicting she would have to come within his blade's significant reach to put them to use. Â He stood motionless like a sentinel ready to react at the slightest twitch, all while soft winds rolled down nearby dunes, sending blades of grass and sand alike over his black, plated coat.

Considering that we already ran into each other a couple of times id happily help out! Smile

As you know i myself am super new, but i just was thrown into the cold water last week and participated in the Grindstone... it definitly is great fun and i absolutley recommend it!

If you want to we could attend the next one together or even do a little sparing session before the event!

Jana is a jack-of-all-arms in melee combat, having a little bit of skill with most weapons and specialising in unarmed/fist weapons. She could be convinced to tutor someone, or very easily talked into a sparring match.
