THE UNSPOKEN RULES OF RP:
#1:  You may not play a dragon, the descendant of a dragon, or anything dragon-related.  It may seem cool to play a dragon at first.  You wouldn't know, at first, that you've literally become the joke at that point.

#2:  Your brooding must be limited in scope.  If you sit in the shadowy corner, keeping to yourself, eyeing everyone bitterly, well.... people will leave you alone and not RP with you.  They know already that any RP with you isn't going to leave them room to brood themselves.

#3:  Do not produce your own flask/bottle from your bag and drink it in the bar.  That makes no damn sense.  It'd be like walking into a McDonalds and pulling out a chili cheese burrito.

#4:  Keep all your ERP in PMs.  I don't care about immersion, characterization, or realism.  Do not undress your character in the game world and sit them down in an empty room.  The reason this rule is unspoken is because you'd think it should go without saying.  It doesn't.  Keep your clothes on, do all ERP in PMs, and make sure you are responding to the right person (and not dumping it accidentally in /say) when you post.

#5:  If you aren't ready to have your ass kicked, don't threaten anyone or talk about them behind their backs.  Just because you have discretion over your character doesn't mean people will take you seriously if you're starting a fight every time you walk into a bar.

#6:  Don't get bigger than your in-game britches.  If you're a level 10, be ready to be called out by a level 50.  You may not think it's fair, but no one is going to treat you like an unstoppable ninja if you're just a level 5 pugilist.

#7:  If you want to be taken seriously, and you're not playing an old man, have one or both of your parents be alive.  Most roleplayers will eventually start to roll their eyes at the shocking mortality rate of Eorzea if all our parents died to beast tribes.

#8:  If you tell people you have a price on your head, that is an open invitation to be stalked and have your ass kicked at inopportune moments.  Avoid it by being a smart criminal.

#9:  Never say a thing like, "women desire him."  No they don't.  That's a profound misunderstanding of women.  Ugly men throughout history have been more attractive than any of us simply by force of personality.  That's not something you can dictate.  Just say he's handsome, let the women desire him if you can pull it off.

If you're a woman, you can say, "men desire her."  That is not a misunderstanding of men.  It may be a misunderstanding of "desire", but not of men.

#10:  There is no better way to get yourself despised by other roleplayers faster than the OOC hissy fit.  Do not get other people involved in your OOC drama with other players.  Do not threaten to leave the game if people don't make your character feel better.  Definitely don't spend more time complaining OOC than posting IC.  If "everyone" seems like they aren't roleplaying correctly, the problem isn't them.  The problem is you.

Hmmm, I wouldn't say that all of these ideas are shared by the RP community at large. Things like OOC character level being used IC as proof that you are stronger is still a really split issue; this is along with debatable things like if you should RP with relic weapons or having your character be part of the main story. I think he was asking for general rules, like obeying lore, metagaming, and stuff that a very large portion of the population agree's with.

Oh, I suppose while I am responding to this post I can add something else as well. Be mindful about being too special of a snowflake. I think we all want our character's to be different, to stand out, and be fun, but there is a line you have to be careful not to cross. When you start entering the realm of being sent from an alternate dimension and having some form of advanced knowledge (like being a blue mage or something) or being able to grow wings made of aether IC, then you may be taking it too far. I'm not suggesting that everyone be plain characters, but just be careful.

There is a great RPer who plays as a seer, but allows their power to be completely random and lets the other character decide what she is shown or if she see's anything at all. Though this makes her someone very unique she is careful about not overdoing it so it works out perfectly fine ^^.

^ To add, there isn't anything wrong with making your character a little special (Though I, personally, don't do that, I prefer my characters to be normal with special things happening around them) it really is how you play them.

I know someone who plays a hearer, but it doesn't feel over the top or special snowflake-y - in fact most of his rp time is filled with headaches and when he tries to help people it's only when they ask him oocly and he always has some kind of balance to it (Memory loss, elementals mad, etcetc). That's fine. It's not something I'd ever do with my character, but it doesn't come across as special snowflakey to me at all.

It's when you're good at everything. "I'm the best BLM, I'm the best WHM (>.>), I'm going to be the inventor of RDM~, Also I'm good with all the weapons, and know all the things."

There's also something called the Anti-Mary Sue that you want to watch out for. It's being the victim all the time in order to garner sympathy for your character. Don't do that either, it's the exact same thing as above just in a different context. Not every stab wound need be life threatening (Especially with healers about), not every person need kidnap you, your life need not be in danger 24/7.

The above is coming from me - whose character has been stabbed a lot, kidnapped twice, and can be damseled sometimes. There's a fine line and sometimes even I fear I cross it (Is 6 stabbings in 7 months too much? Probably, but most of them weren't planned! Or any of them...)

Quoting for funsies and devil's advocation. Do not take all replies seriously. : P

What if "Dragon" is the new race? THEN what will we do!? Seriously though, please don't be a vampire princess unicorn spider queen from space. It's awkward.

Mostly true. I can't find much to argue with here. Sometimes it's fun to just poke at this sort of character until they run away or crack though : P.

Quote:#3:  Do not produce your own flask/bottle from your bag and drink it in the bar.  That makes no damn sense.  It'd be like walking into a McDonalds and pulling out a chili cheese burrito.
Dude! What good pirate/alcoholic doesn't have booze on them at any given time? What if you're just there to hang out and you want a drink, but you're a cheapskate? Pocket booze, man.

Quote:#4:  Keep all your ERP in PMs.
Yeah ok, can't argue with that like at aaallll. On the flip-side, don't assume every couple chilling quietly off in a corner is ERpin'. Maybe they're whispering about puppies. Don't judge.

Quote:#5:  If you aren't ready to have your ass kicked, don't threaten anyone or talk about them behind their backs.  Just because you have discretion over your character doesn't mean people will take you seriously if you're starting a fight every time you walk into a bar.
Consequences man! They're real! Aren't we going for realism here!? Minus, you know.. the magic.. and animals that don't exist and... well, a lot of other stuff... Still! If you mouth off, get ready to guard your teeth!

Quote:#6:  Don't get bigger than your in-game britches.  If you're a level 10, be ready to be called out by a level 50.  You may not think it's fair, but no one is going to treat you like an unstoppable ninja if you're just a level 5 pugilist.
A agree and disagree with this. In a perfect world, everyone would just be REASONABLE, but this is so often not the case ; ;. If it's in your characters background to be a ninja and you're level 5.. ok maybe just.. keep it under wraps for a while and be a ninja later. Maybe I'll play along, though, if you're REASONABLE with your demands! On the flip side, a number of us have all 50s (me, me, me!), but my character is not a master at arms. You're not a god if you have all 50s!

Quote:#7:  If you want to be taken seriously, and you're not playing an old man, have one or both of your parents be alive.  Most roleplayers will eventually start to roll their eyes at the shocking mortality rate of Eorzea if all our parents died to beast tribes.
To be fair, Eorzea is in like cooonstant war times. If it makes sense for your parents to be dead and you want em to be dead.. kill em! Maybe keep your parents around and kill em in a plot later! Send them away to an unnamed, far off land to avoid the calamity! So many things you can do with NPC parents...

Quote:#8:  If you tell people you have a price on your head, that is an open invitation to be stalked and have your ass kicked at inopportune moments.  Avoid it by being a smart criminal.
YES! Oh. My. God. Please don't tell me you're an assassin in the middle of the adventurer's guild. Secrets are secrets for a reason! Keep them and only tell people you trust, it's much more fun.

Quote:#9:  Never say a thing like, "women desire him."  No they don't.

This seems sexist >.> Rather than stating this, though, why not make it come to pass. Be desirable if you want people to think of your character as such. Don't just say it. If you want your character to be a playboy, BE a playboy. Same goes with everything from slut to prude and things that have nothing to do with "desire" : P.

Quote:#10:  There is no better way to get yourself despised by other roleplayers faster than the OOC hissy fit.
This seems pretty accurate. I dub it 12 year old syndrome. My apologies to the twelve year olds out there that aren't crazy like this. : P

Thanks to all the new replys, I will be taking everything said into consideration and try to RP along them, as I said I'd like to not fu/ck up any relations I have by crossing any kind of general rule of thumb, thanks again!

Without gripping the sword, I cannot protect you. While gripping the sword, I cannot embrace you.
