After I have succeeded at least three times in a row, only then will I start using bold synths - however, in the case of high-rank and difficult crafts, it is inadvisable to ever switch out of standard synthesis. It is also unlikely that you will be able to succeed several times in a row. In those instances you can only keep attempting on whites and pray for success.
For crafts that are actually around your level, however, using this method can ensure an extremely high-quality end product.
