I've been wondering this too. Every time I have a somewhat realistic reaction to it (read: be rightfully frightened) the people in question who do the minion summoning keep moving their their dialouge/plot right along regardless and treat me as if my reaction were silly or unfounded. These will be standard characters too, guards, merchants what have you. Not the type of people that would have so much experience with voidsent as to just brush off any fear of their arrival as unreasonable.
I wonder if the whole voidsent/demon angle has just so overused in fantasy media as to convey an undue sense of comfort with it. |

I typically wave away my beady eye in public if I'm being engaged in conversation. Haven't really been questioned about it.

One of my characters is somewhat Gothic with is the primary reason why she would be interested in voidsent, but so much for that story arc, I guess...

Lost being a Black Mage (from 1.0 and now), really, -really- hates this sort of practice. Sure, just make her already look worse. She's trying to redeem what she is, not smear it deeper into the abyss. Le Sigh. Hehe.

Tossing my little bit in, since my character happens to be heavily tied with voidsent right now. Â Do a lot of people actually IC summon these? Â I haven't seen much besides Zeraia and I, but I don't get out much either~
My character does it because she was blinded by her means to get power and Zeraia used her, but after nearly dying she's trying to erase all traces of it and is a wreck right now. Â People can RP however they want, but voidsent's only goal once they set foot in Eorzea is 'eat aether', and our characters are aether and will die if they aren't controlled somehow, or become enthralled. Â It's a very real concern, depending on the kind summoned. |

I think it is best left up to the individual character. That said, most of the lore points to summoning voidsent and/or dealing with them being a big no no. Like HUGE. Like this is a good way to sow the seeds of your own inevitable destruction. Still, that does not stop the Thaumatuges Guild from dabbling it, and other giant no no areas of spell craft. They just aren't public about it, and there in lies the key.Â
I like to call it "shouting out that you are an assassin in a pub full of strangers" syndrome. Real assassins (or other people that dabble in the unsavory) wouldn't do that. A Black Mage knows they have a stigma against them for what they dabble in. Why invite undue scorn by advertising it? Now, every character is going to answer that question differently, and that is perfectly fine. Just like every character is going to have a different reaction to someone who is dabbling with the voidsent. I will say, the one thing that annoys me about voidsent use and characters is the ooc (I must stress this, OOC) attitude that such things can be messed with and there will be zero negative effects for doing so. Voidsent are not your friends. They are not your buddies. If they are your only friends and buddies you probably need new friends. This would be the "bad Twilight Caste, no biscuit" take on demon summoning. I tend to think the lore supports this. Yar. ;p |

The general public probably ignores ahriman or voidsent in public, even if (the universal) you have them out ICly, simply because that's ridiculous and you'd be arrested and/or executed for summoning demons inside of safe areas. You know, it's sort of a bad idea to bring man-eating monsters inside city walls, not to mention consorting with them.
If people are ignoring it, it's because they're not wanting to make an OOC fight break out by informing you how pants-on-head it is that someone thinks it's cool to just float around on a demon. |

Hellllll naaaaaaw. If I'm ridin' IC I'm riding a yellow birdie. |

Well of course it's meant to be about public IC moments. If it's ooc/non-rp I don't care about what people ride unless I want the mount to ride on.
Lalafell flop riding on Ahriman is one of the most amusing things ever. |
