While Doma is quite obviously based on Japan, it is not actually Japan so they are free to deviate from actual Japanese historical or cultural things such as naming.
Maybe the language really has phased out/become archaic judging by the NPC surnames we see in the Ninja quest: Moonrise, Sunrise, Redbeak, etc. I feel the fact that Domans seem to have surnames in line with the language of the rest of Hydaelyn shows at least some distance from the Doman native language, even though all of their forenames are Doman (at least from what I have seen).
Are there any NPC examples of Domans with actual Doman or Japanese surnames?

There are some fairly Japanese-sounding names in the 2.2 content: You run into Yozan, Houzan, Houmei, not to mention Yugiri herself.
I learned this by digging through XIVDB's quest dialogue, looking for the line where Yugiri specifically states why she keeps covered up. |

Ugh, please excuse my stupidity. Kamome was right about the non-asian surname I was just confusing the word for given name. So yes, Doman appear to have a Japanese-style forename and some type of title as their surname.

Alphinaud: Lady Yugiri, forgive me for observing, but... your choice of attire seems like to evoke feelings of mistrust. Yugiri:Â Men are wont to fear the unfamiliar. We know this from experience. We seek only to spare the people of Ul'dah unnecessary disquiet. Alphinaud:Â I shall defer to your experience then. Yugiri:Â I thank you for your understanding. |

*lore clarity glowwwww*
Thanks for entertaining all the questions! Especially re: the names. And yes, surname = last name. ; ) Can't wait for the expansion lore bombs. Hopefully if all the new Far Eastern crafting items are any indication we will get some more Doma lore, too. |

So one connection I know that exists is the name Doma coming from Doma Castle in FFVI. I wonder if RT is eventually going to some how turn into Doma Castle with how it's building up over time and the Doman influence is starting to take more root. Also the fact that in FFVI Doma Castle opposed the Gestahlian Empire and was wiped out in response.
