Evey squinted a bit as she looked through the snow, but she was having just as much difficult time as the other woman was with figuring out what it was. She shrugged her shoulders, holding the reins of her chocobo to keep the bird steady, keeping behind the other two dragoons.

"I trust both your judgement on this matter."

"Do you now?" Mayu chuckled quietly and glanced over at Evey. She shrugged lightly and then proceeded to hop off her chocobo. With trepidation she began to move forward towards the dark lump in the road, but it didn't seem to move.

She moved closer to the large mass and noticed it was a dragon, albeit one of the smaller varieties that frequented the area. Only they didn't seem to like to linger on the roads, so she had no idea what it was doing here. They were used to the snow, after all. The dragon barely noticed her and made no movement towards her. It felt like a cheap shot, killing it when it didn't seem to want to pick a fight, but she didn't see what other choice she had.

She removed her lance from her back and assumed an offensive stance, readying a blow. As if finally sensing the danger, the dragon unfurled itself and went on the defensive.

Mordagen quickly looked up to the sky as if something else caught his attention.  He looked to the other two just as quick as before.

"Mayu,  you take this one."

He climbed on top of Kraw as fast as he could and rode off with his lance drawn.  The snow seemed to pick up a bit and all visibility of him became lost.  The other two could hear nothing of neither him nor Kraw.  Moments later, Kraw came running back up showing no signs of injury and without Mordagen.  The Chocobo let out a loud "Wark!"

The dragon before her lunged, aiming to strike at her chest. Luckily she was ready for it, and parried it quickly, albeit clumsily, with her lance. She heard Kraw call out, and was surprised to see the massive bird alone. Lulubelle stood by nervously near Evey, awaiting further instruction.

Mayu waved at the birds quickly and pointed at the dragon. Lulubelle stood firmly in her spot nervously, unwilling to engage in battle. The dragoon took another lunge at the dragon, aiming to knock it off balance and distract it. Unfortunately the beast was ready for her, and spun to thwart the lance with its tail. Mayu grunted irritably, knowing that she had foolishly underestimated her quarry and worrying about her missing friend in the back of her mind.

A bit alarmed that things were headed in such a sour direction, and quickly. When the other dragoon took off and didn't return, the red-hatted mage quickly hopped down from her own chocobo, and glanced at the saddle. She quickly grabbed her crooked hooked cane-looking stave, taking a glance towards Mayu and her current status with the dragon.

The Hyur ran forward in the snow, stopping a safe distance enough away that she wouldn't get into melee with the dragon, but close enough that she could cast her spells if she needed to. A moment passed, and while Mayu was busy with distracting the dragon, a blue light flashed around the dragoon as a protection spell was cast from behind.

Mayu was suddenly enveloped in a protection spell, to her surprise. The dragon took another lunge at the dragoon but it stopped short due to the spell. It shook its head, a little confused and dazed. She looked back at Evey, gave her a swift thumbs up and then turned back to the monstrosity.

Really, it wasn't that big. It shouldn't have been such a problem. But she was worried for her friend and even more concerned that Evey would end up as collateral damage before all of this was over. In short, she was distracted and she knew that when she was distracted nothing seemed to go her way. She inhaled sharply and tried to recall her lessons from before, and then took a grand leap up...up...up...

Until she was no longer visible.

Within a few short seconds, she was falling head first toward the dragon's head and pierced the back of its neck with her lance. The dragon staggered left and right wildly before collapsing into death. Mayu landed safely beside it, surprisingly unscathed.

The display had certainly been impressive to the young Hyur girl. Evey smiled and ran over when Mayu came to a soft landing, avoiding getting too close, lest the dragon beast suddenly rouse back to life for some reason. Caution was better than carelessness, in any regard.

"Wow, I've never seen anyone fell a dragon in one blow like that! Pretty impressive!" She paused in her praise, her brows knitting together as she looked back behind her through the snow, where her chocobo had been waiting. Looking back to Mayu, she seemed concerned. "Where do you think your friend went off to? I hope he's alright."

Mayu sighed with relief and looked at the woman.

"Oh no. That was definitely a fluke. I think I just hit it in the right spot."

She bent down to observe the body. It was smallish and even a little malnourished.

"He's dinky. If he were healthier I'm not sure I'd be able to do that. I've killed a bunch before out here but not with so much speed."

Satisfied they were safe at the moment, Mayu strode to Every.

"Those spells were great, Evey. Thank you. And...yeah, Mord isn't back yet?"

The celebration was interrupted by a loud dragon road from above.  They couldn't see anything through the storm but soon the dragon pierced through the clouds and let out another loud roar.  It was in pain.  Standing on the dragon's back was Mordagen, watching the beast's descent.

He jumped upwards, distancing himself from the dragon, grabbed his lance with both hands and dove at the dragon, engulfed in flames.  Mordagen landed at the base of the dragon's skull, releasing a fiery explosion.  When the flames cleared, The Dragoon was standing firm, holding onto his lance for safety as the dragon came near the ground.

He was unable to jump from the dragon smashed into the snow and ice, tumbled across the ground and eventually stopped.  Mordagen lay there, motionless.  Kraw ran to him with a loud "WARK!" and then Mordagen slowly climbed to his feet, pet his chocobo, and picked up his lance.

"How'd the other one go?"

When Mordagen picked up his lance, Mayu threw hers down into the snow. She balled her hands into fists and let out an angry roar deep within her throat.

"Are you serious right now?! You were grandstanding and I was over here worried you died and worried about Evey and trying to kill an anemic dragon. And here you just dive on down all 'la la la.'"

Lulubelle looked sheepishly over at her owner and shuffled closer to Evey. Obviously the chocobo had some shame.

"And you also owe Kraw an apology. I think he was worried about you. Jerk."

Mordagen pointed to the wings of the dragon he killed. "See those?  Notice how they aren't as long as yours.  The one I killed flies faster.  It's a scout.  Any hesitation or running a plan by you would have cost us precious time we didn't have.  Precious time we still don't really have because now the rest will come looking for the two that haven't returned."

He reaches in his bags and takes out a box of ChocoTreats™.  He holds out his hand and Kraw happily munches them up.  Much to the Chocobo's dismay, Mordagen puts the box back in his bags.

"Now let's move."

Evey had opened her mouth to say something when she'd seen the display up above. She had always heard that Dragoons were pretty fierce in their ability to fell dragons with ease, but she never really thought she'd see such a spectacle. It took a certain kind of person, physique, and ability to do what they did. Needless to say she was impressed, and perhaps a bit at a loss for words.

She watched the display between the two when Mord returned to them, bringing a hand to her lips to stifle a light chuckle, as her face lit up with an amused smile. She nodded in agreement in regards to their departure, turning back towards her Chocobo and giving a sharp whistle. The lightly armored bird trotted on over, and the girl grabbed onto the reins and hoisted herself up easily onto the saddle.

"You know, you two could probably make a lot of gil if you charged admission for a show like that." she said teasingly.

To argue the point, or not argue the point? In her mind's eye she didn't like what Mordagen had done, despite his reasoning for doing so. She felt like a failure compared to him. Only half a dragoon - nay, a fraction - and this was a feeling that soured her entire mood. The adrenaline from felling the dragon was beginning to wear off, and in its place, melancholy.

Evey, however, had a natural ability to life ones spirits. The girl was beautiful, no doubt, but Mayu could also see that she was beautiful on the inside as well. She forced herself to smile at the young Hyur. It conjured memories of a time when she was mistaken for a dragoon pole dancer.

"You know, there's this funny story I'd like to tell you on the way to the keep."

She walked over to Lulubelle, who wasn't making eye contact - silly bird - and climbed atop. She took the reins into her hands and gave her chocobo a light pat to urge her forward.

"A miqo'te couple approached me and asked me to dance for them. A lewd dance, mind you."
