This is not the first, second, or even third time I've seen or heard that sort of behaviour/reaction in the Quicksand. Not sure if it's the same person(s) each time.
Problem is... the three big NPC's in the Quicksand either (on the surface) support or say nothing against this view. I swapped to a character I have lurking on another server (she's level 4, so this is probably as close as to NPC dialogue to someone who's RPing a non-Adventurer) and this is what I got.
Momodi: You've found your way to the Quicksand, friend. As you can see, we cater to a clientele with an adventurous streak.
Momodi: With the chaos left in the wake of the Calamity, the townsfolk'll be needin' the help of my patrons more than ever.
-- She does say that the Quicksand caters to adventurers.Â
-- However, she never says that it is -exclusively- for adventurers.Â
Otopa Pottopa: Good day to you, adventurer. Do you seek lodgings at the Hourglass?
Otopa Pottopa: Pardon me, what was your name again? Malay Sant? Hmmm...I've heard nothing from Mistress Momodi about this. Alas, without her express permission, I cannot permit you to stay.
>What would you like to do?
>Option: Ask about the Hourglass.
Otopa Pottopa: The Hourglass is only the most famous inn on the Merchant Strip.
Otopa Pottopa: We have accommodations to satisfy every client's tastes, from lavish suites to simple rooms.
Otopa Pottopa: Were circumstances different, I would gladly invite you to make use of our facilities. However, we have had to enact certain policies in the wake of the Calamity and the unpleasantness that followed. Only those who have proven themselves trustworthy are permitted to stay.
Otopa Pottopa: Should Mistress Momodi deem you one such individual, you may enjoy our hospitality at will.
-- Okay, so this guy won't even do business with you unless you're vetted by Momodi.
-- HOWEVER... he runs the Hourglass, not the Quicksand.Â
Eustace: My apologies, ma'am, but I am not authorized to issue guildleves to those as new to adventuring as you appear to be. Perhaps you should speak with Momodi Modi across the hall and see if she cannot point you in the right direction.
-- Another that won't do business with you until Momodi says you're good. And his service is for adventurers.
Okay. So that's the big three in the room... and it's not pretty. Thankfully, none of them say anything along the lines of "You're not an adventurer, so get the heck out!". The other NPC's don't say much else, just bits of flavor text... except for one.
Papasu: Hello there, traveler. Have you tried any dishes at the Quicksand yet? Nothing prepares you for a day of adventuring like a hearty meal, you know!
>What would you like to know?
>Option: Why is it called "The Quicksand"?
Papasu: Have a look around you─all manner of folk get caught in the lure of the Quicksand! They gather here to meet and mingle with one another.
Papasu: 'Course, you adventurers are less like to linger long. Aye, your kind is not unlike sand itself─the more tightly we try to hold on to you, the easier it is for you to slip through our fingers...
Papasu: Oh, I know all about your type. My husband used to be an adventurer, you know. Oh, he was quite a gallant hero way back when. But his days of derring-do are but a distant memory now─aye, and his strapping physique as well. <sigh>
-- Here it is, game text that says more than just adventurers come into the Quicksand.
-- Iiiiiinteresting... According to this, if you wanted to adhere to the lore of the Quicksand... if you're an adventurer, you shouldn't be hanging around the Quicksand much...
Hope this helps for future 'dealings' with those types of people.
