The Adventurer's Unit and/or lone operative approach works well for me, because I've had bad experiences with "military RP" groups in previous MMO's - most notably WoW. I was in a few, and each of them tried very hard to portray an actual unit within the armies of their respective factions. A couple of them even did it very well! But in all of them, including the one I ended up being an officer in, it always felt like everyone who wasn't an officer was simply a face in the crowd and only really there for the purpose of furthering the GM's goals. Everyone was expected to fall in line, be in uniform at all times - there was little room for individuality except for outside of guild functions, and the ones that weren't expressly "on duty" events requiring uniform were few and far between.
I'm glad there are people who enjoy that, and more power to them! But honestly, I would be bored senseless.
