Actually in the context of Final Fantasy MMO they do serve a purpose, that of communicating with people who do not speak your language. I havnt tried out the chat much to see if we have the auto translate stuff from FFXI, i'm guessing we do, but emotes are another way to convey to people what is going on.

Most games with player housing also allow you to customize the look of it with items gathered or created by the player. This in turn gives another carrot on the stick to keep people playing and serves a gameplay purpose of sorts.
