Is Eorzea on some sort of metal standard? Do they use gold? What IS gil? What is it made of? Where did it come from? Why is it valuable and what is it valued at?
All of this is pretty much a question mark. If I absolutely -have- to specify an amount in game I make an OOC note that I am using an American exchange rate. There is just nothing else on the books that I've seen that I'd be comfortable using. Most RP can be accomplished without getting into that nitty gritty anyway since a lot of people don't actually exchange gil in RP aside from perhaps tips etc.
Vender prices vs. Market Board prices are heavily skewed as well. The amount of gil someone will have in their purse is likely highly more than any normal merchant will ask for so is everyone just super rich?
I've always imaged gil is some type of coin currency, but we've never really seen what it looks like.
WE do know there are all sorts of old Allagan coins of various metals though!
