Hiromichi Tanaka was one of the longtime designers for FFXI and the masses hold him (myself included) responsible for the clusterfuck that was FFXIV 1.0.
The best gear in the game for FFXI? It came from the first two expansion. It wouldn't be replaced for three expansions and a level-cap increase. Everything was sidegrades and situationals, and XI had a lot of flatly bad gear and decisions in it. We remember it fondly now, of course, but it was a mess back then.
How put this, for the folks who didn't play XI...
You needed 44,000 experience to hit the old level cap of 75. Getting 6000 exp a night, spending multiple hours in parties used to be a GOOD night. That's if you could get a party, because XI had no solo content. Monsters didn't give incremental EXP: Killing something levels below you gave you 15 or 30 exp, if it gave any at all, and that proceeded to the cap. It's not so bad when you only need 2000 exp to level and can run around whacking bees, but you stop being able to solo comfortably around level 12.
I could go on and on and on. Tanaka is the battlecry of retarded design choices.
Must....not....derail....thread.....
I will say that a good party could get over 10k an hour if memory serves me correctly. At 75 cap you could pull in 12k+ for the thinger points (the name escapes me). I don't know much about gear though because I spent most of my life in a Scorpion Harness and Ohat, lol.
Edit: Jammer Leeches, hahahahahaha. I forgot all about them! I actually almost went and redownloaded that game for that free weekend. It owns a part of my soul and will forever call out to me like a siren on the shore.
