
It's happened to me on occasion (not in XIV, but in CoX and I think in EQ), and yeah, the secrets were pretty big. If the character came about the information ICly, then that's the consequence of having a character with secrets.
In fact, the play of keeping and telling secrets is an interesting way to spawn some conflict RP. The way I see it, telling a secret is an IC action with potential IC consequences; spreading rumours once you know a secret is the same thing. In short, it's an IC problem with an IC solution, IMO.
Of course, if the person metagamed the secret, I wouldn't be terribly pleased with their behavior.
