T'rahnu has always been black & orange, for two reasons: vibrant orange really stands out in a crowd and is extraordinarily warm and energetic as a color, while black helps to create contrast with that orange allowing it to stand out even more than it already does. T'rahnu has always been an outgoing, eccentric, confident-bordering-on-arrogant individual so this combination works perfectly for her purposes.
Unfortunately, the lack of two-tone dyeing means I've mostly just stuck to black-on-yellow-skin instead. What a shame.
Generally speaking, when I pick out a character's colors I am thinking more along the lines of what looks good and makes sense for that character to have a preference for as opposed to consciously thinking about the associations and connotations of a particular color set. Usually said connotations end up working for the character anyway, but that's more of a happy coincidence than anything else.
Now, if only Squeenix would let us dye secondary (and tertiary) colors...
