The loss of his memories and some obvious skill sets he retained leaves him questioning a lot of his past to a degree which leaves him hesitant to bonding with people in general. On the same level it's allowed him to work within the underworld effectively and made for solid and clear cut contracts and allegiances with individuals since he quite obviously favors no one and weighs on things equally. Recently though he's regained some memories and has had someone invade his personal bubble so well see where that ends up going.
Mav is a strange case, he flirts, enjoys the company of women (not even sexual, just company in general), and makes a big deal about relationships and people enjoying life. Most of everything he does is an act but he's honest about what he does just not necessarily why. Speaking of Carteneau... Being Highlander both him and his sister joined a militia force for Carteneau as volunteers, he survived and she didn't. It's part of why he doesn't really get intimate with anyone but doesn't enjoy being alone either. Prior to the battle he was the serious warrior, his personality shift years later is honoring her love of life and so forth but he's still coping. He'll make friends and care for people even if he doesn't outwardly want to, big guy, big heart or something, but as far as a romantic relationship goes that sort of bonding scares him.
