I'd recommend taking a look at the LS section of the forums and seeing if any of them catch your fancy. A lot of them are either for a FC, or have members in FCs that might fit your need!
As for Lore, beyond looking stuff up on the various FFXIV wikis, there's also the Lore section on the official forum (which is how I found the RPC, oddly enough!) and lore often gets discussed around here as well in the FFXIV Discussion section. Take a look around, see if anything answers your questions... and don't be afraid to ask if there's still some lingering!
