You can certainly take a risk and expand beyond a set circle of friends. I'm rather open myself in regards to interacting with outsiders but after playing numerous MMO's over the years I'll readily admit to having a low threshold to 'bleeding'.
Now if I see the warning signs I usually just cut someone away and move on. Many will find that harsh but I'm here to have fun and relax, not risk having drama erupt around me or tread on eggshells with everything that I do.
I do offer additional chances once the dust is settled though.
