Another filthy American here, Morning/Evening, regardless of time, welcome to the RPC!
Depending on your timezone, we may not always cross paths in-game, but feel free to hit up Franz anytime I might be online. I promise that unless I'm already in some active RP scene, I'll find a way to make it work. (Goes the same to all you RPC lurkers).
If you've got questions about gameplay or the lore, DO ask questions! There is a MASSIVE wealth of information on the RPC!
If you're used to MMO RP, an explanation probably isn't needed, but here are a couple tips special to FFXIV.
"/em" is your custom emote command. It will simulate the emote text and your character's mouth will not move. If you've used IRC or some other IM systems, it's identical to the /me command in those. (In FFXIV /me makes you point to yourself). You'll see a lot of people pair it up with dialogue, if they want to start a text block with an action.
ex: /em raises his hand in greeting. "Welcome to the RPC!" ((Even if Franz would probably never be that friendly))
"/[emote command] motion" is also a HUGE help. What this does is it will do the emote action/motion, but without the automatic text. When paired up with a /em or other dialogue, you can make some really nice actions.
  ex: /welcome motion
/em greets <target>. "Welcome to the RPC!"
