That's cuz I flubbed and combined two PLD skills into one! Woops. (The payoff to Holy Succor was that it had a rediculously high MP cost at the time, so you could only realistically cast it 4-5x max per fight.) I was looking up said MP cost when I realized I made a woops.
Holy Succor = 1.5x potency of WHM Cure I, and if cast on another player you also received 50% HP restoration of whatever you cured for. Crit Heal that DRG who stands in AoEs for 1200, get 600 HP back for yourself. Plus all the juicy enmity that came with.
Divine Veil = Grants buff that, if you receive a cure spell, grants all players within range a Medica II-strength regen. And all enmity from cure+regen went to Tank instead of healer.
Merp my bad. Still, both spells were super super juicy for PLD.
TL;DR - PLD used to be super awesome and had tons of utility, until 2.0 made it derp. Yes, I have a million buffs that all do the exact same thing and I just sit here and take damage. No healing, nothing cool, no utility. It's all good. Don't mind me. I'll just sit here.

Also, on topic, heavy tank armor with high DEF rating actually used to mean something (kinda) in 1.0 under the "dLvl System" where an enemy's level and attack power were weighed against your level and DEF rating to determine damage floor/ceiling. Straight damage mitigation percents weren't a thing yet. I think the only ability in game that straight mitigated was Sentinel and that ability was OP and it only reduced damage by -20%. (pretty weaksauce now)
So if you were a THM in 1.0 wearing heavy armor, you didn't actually suffer too much damage penalty for wearing tank armor (cuz INT was kinda broken) but you'd be about invincible.
Now days, DEF doesn't really do much. So tank armor on a BLM would probably be useless and just lower their damage, not actually make them survive better. Which is kinda counter-intuitive for a ranged DPS.
But from a lore standpoint, there's no reason a mage couldn't wear armor. It shouldn't lore-wise dampen their ability, just most aren't physically suited for the task. Also...
