Welcome to the server, my first FF too. You should fit right in with RPs.
The FF lore is out there and quirky (that my view as it seems to only loosely associate across the various games). The good news is following the main story etc.. will introduce you to things, and there are pockets of lore on the interwebs.
Check out the Linkshell tab above, there you will find Linkshells (chat groups) and Free Companies (guilds) some of which will likely take your fancy. Add to that the events calender and you should be good to get connected.
Fell free to ask for connections and help as that seems to work okay. Or frequent the RP hubs others mentions for a diverse set of RP opportunities.
