The great thing about the game is being able to pick up other skills so cooking and booking... arcanist.. sounds like a nice combo and as you learn more about the game you can tweak it and fit it to what you want.
I started out role playing on forum boards or through IM (to then put on forum boards) and in-game is a lot like the dialogue letting the surrounding set the scene instead of describing it so much. ^_^
The Handbook helps out with some basics and you should be able to find tidbits of lore here. Overall most people follow their main class story-line to pick up details and trivia.Â
