I guess the trick would be for everyone to stop being so bizarrely controlling over every little minute detail that they experience when it comes to a community oriented activity like roleplaying, and actually accept what comes naturally, rather than continuing with this cycle of behavior that sees complaints like this pop up over and over again.
I love when I see people RPing in the field, and sometimes I'll stick my nose into it. I've never gotten anything but positive reactions when doing this. I suspect this is because people who RP in public places are generally open to being seen and even "audience participation."Â
But I also try to get a feel for whether or not the RP is private-ish or semi-serious because I think spontaneous intrusion into an RP can be disruptive. You may want to RP something in the field without making it an "open" RP or having it get derailed into a "nice to meet you I'm so&so."Â
I've had a few really memorable spontaneous field RPs. I think the best ones come from you kind of "spotting" RPers who don't appear to be in the middle of anything and sparking something up with them. I had a really fun RP with a few people in Coerthas while waiting for a FATE to spawn and it's still one of my favourites. And another was when me and some of my company-mates were going to the Stone Vigil IC and a man who overheard us gave us some nice foreboding warnings about the horrible things he'd seen in there.Â
I almost always enjoy the flavour you get from a third party intruding on a field RP. I've legitimately never been in a situation where it felt invasive, and I think that's mostly because the RP community generally has a good sense of what's appropriate.
