They just happen to teach the player to use a sword and shield. It is for bloodsport, fame and most especially, MONEY. A number of prominent Ul'dahn people have vastly improved their lives by fighting in the Bloodsands. (Like Raubahn). While inaccessible now, (outside the Ultros fight I think), the player used to have to fight on the Bloodsands during the FFXIV 1.0 days. Now, the story quests are a bit different.
