There's a lot more to it that you could catch up on if you looked through the MSQ cutscenes back at the inn. For instance, The Empire are resuming their campaign on Eorzea under the command of Gaius van Baelsar and they have been present at both primal fights, with a high rank officer named Nero tol Scaeva in particular using a device to take readings of the the Primals' strength(?) from a distance for reasons yet unknown.
Ifrit was described as disappointing and Titan I believe was described as "better" but still not good enough.
Also, in an earlier cutscene, you see Gaius look skyward as a few of those dandelion helicopter things are transporting a large object overhead. It looked like a vehicle of some description.
Oh, oh oh... and as you quest you sometimes encounter scenes where your characters discovers what are called Crystals of Light. You are apparently collecting these so that you can later challenge the Elite Four.
