Donations from interested parties are always a plus, so long as they come unsolicited. It gets awkward when you ask folks for cash in an MMO (and this is coming from someone who's technically done that twice.)
The only other trap you want to be on the lookout for is making the prize large enough that you get a bunch of folks not interested in RP as much as they're interested in free gil. The money should always be a bonus for hanging out, not the reason.
Congratulations on your first turn-out though! Seemed like a lot of folks were interested and turned up. Balmung loves to fight, that's for damn sure.
