Hello there, welcome to FFXIV! A Liadan said, every person and every free company is different, but you can find just about every type of role-play you'd expect here. As for learning the game's lore, aside from the discussion threads here and what you learn in game, at the top menu you can see a "Wiki" link that can take you to the RPC's wiki which contains a few thread about the game's lore.
