Some minor and mega spoilers, plus a rant of sortsGreater Dragons are able to pass on their essence in place of death as long as some remnant of their power remains. Whether or not this exclusive to the two dragons seen to do this are as of yet unconfirmed.
Greater Dragons (Only Midgard so far) are able to "birth" themselves and accelerate their aging process at will.Â
Greater Dragons can still be killed apparently somehow despite the above abilities (As proven with the existence of Bahamut).
A dragons power resides in their eyes, and this power can be passed on or taken.
FFXIV dragons originally (or at least their "king") are not from Hydaelyn at all.
Despite not being from Hydaelyn, Dragons are still capable of summoning Primals (Which along with Ascians in general may imply primals or the art of summoning in general are neither exclusive nor originated on Hydaelyn).
*THEORY FOLLOWING*
It isnt confirmed at all but Im almost certain that dragons not being from the same planet as everyone else is related to why the rules of the lifestream, or rather "death" do not fully apply to them. (Also extremely similar to the entire situation that happened in FFVII with Jenova, minus the hellish cell takeover)
Further, dragons might apparently be able to fly through space if they are strong/old enough, AND Midgard might not be the only dragon of his...calibur if he came from another planet, simply the progenitor of all the dragons seen in game.
Also a final shot in the dark, I find it odd that having their "King" Explode in a Garlean Super Nuke airship crash did not inspire retaliation and outrage, but having their eyes stolen did. The latter obviously seems worse especially considering the circumstances and the fact that their king can apparently rebirth himself whenever the Hell he feels like it, but it may point to how they view their progenitor, or a least something related to him. As stated above in an earlier post, Dragons collect and bury the dead of their corpses, so why was Midgard not collected? Was it because he wasnt actually fully dead, because he is the highest ranking dragon so no one could collect him, or some other reason?
