
I much prefer the use of quotes. As others have pointed out, it clarifies which parts are spoken, and allows emoting to precede the quote, follow it, or both. It also helps to break up long exchanges and permit changes of mood and tone to have a visual appearance.
"But in the laugh there was another voice. A clearer laugh, an ironic laugh. A laugh which laughs because it chooses not to weep."
