Yeah. A friend of mine and I played a Dune story arc once; where the characters were transported accidentally to Ayenee through an experiment with Spice. His character was Harkkonen and mine one of the scientists. We started a huge brawl in the middle of this tavern and people didn't pay it much mind since it was a "Oh so there's another bar fight with scifi characters." It was pretty amusing really.
No one questioned as you said, and people were interested in the story rather than who played what. I used to play relatives, but later on it got to the point where it was frowned on.
