Yeah, it's that last part that's the pain.
The reason why is that the recent threads list is generated deep in the bowels of the software, and the new custom profile threads actually operate in the templates, right as it's rendering the page. So, the template is called 8 times from the forum software, and what it does is check to see if you've opted out of the forum in question. If so, it noms the link (and puts a nice comment in to tell you so in the HTML).
The tough part is getting the bowels of the software to do that checking instead. I may be able to write a plugin or patch to do this... stay tuned.
