When I select a name for a character, I have exactly two factors in mind: if the name is phonetically pleasing, and aesthetically pleasing. So it has to sound good when being mentioned and look good on text. Rarely do I ever assign a name that has any inherent or relevant meaning--at the risk of sounding pretentious, I would rather the names grow into their own meaning as a representation of the character and having the character define the name, rather than having the name define the character.
