Former homeland and backstory ideas

A large part of my character's backstory involves the calamity and it's the main reason why she travels so much, looking for her family. I'd like to have her former home set on or near carteneu but I am a bit lore blind at the moment. Would there have been civilization so close to the area before the calamity? Does anyone have any better suggestions where to set her origins from? For ic reasons I cannot do any of the major cities. Thanks in advance for any input!
