A lot of people play them because they have a personal, um... "interest", is the most safe-for-work way to put it... in nekomimi (anime catgirl) or furry... "we're going to call it romantic RP but you know better" activities. Not everyone who plays them is doing so for that reason, though (any more than, say, a girl who wears shorts is doing it because she's trying to get attention by showing off her legs - maybe she's just warm and is wearing them for the same reason boys do).Â
Play what you want to play. Chances are, people who may protest are doing so to try and conceal their own feelings of insecurity regarding their own behavior (if they can get other people to look at you with judgment, then less people will be focusing on them for judgment). One of the nice things about Balmung being so populous is that if someone bothers you or you feel they're treating you unfairly it's fairly easy to just never encounter them again without even intentionally going out of your way to avoid them.
