Aside from the creators' words, I'd suggest waiting to actually play on the servers. FFXIV's problem was never ping. It was dropped packets because the datacenter couldn't cope with the number of connections by players. Especially on servers with larger populations.
MMOs aren't twitch-dodge FPS games. Might as well throw in a flight simulator or a multiplayer tetris clone.
