I draw mine stemming from where the ear canal generally is and if they're big wide boys they might extend into the jaw and temple. 
At least for the root of it. Can go crazy with curves and swirls and all that leading away - I don't stick terribly close to in-game models when I draw because something something creative liberties something something AESTHETIC. I've seen people draw Au Ra with multiple horns even and know some hairstyles give you additional nubbins so I don't quite know how that works with the horn=ear thing. Maybe just built up scales?
