I always figured it was considered their pure/untouched/sanctuary that doesn't want to put up with issues or problems. So I figure they're not okay with anyone who leaves to come back under the assumption they'd bring back trouble or some issue that would result in the realm attracting more unwanted issues. I'm sure you could write some way that could allow them to not mind you returning for whatever reason.
If anything, could go the Aladdin route and disguise yourself like Jasmine does, leaving the city in secret then returning like normal. Creativity could go a long way in some areas I bet.
