Especially somewhere like the Empire that's incredibly militaristic and doesn't take kindly to deserters.

I think this is a good story to start out with. I've always felt that what your character has done is less interesting than why and how they did it. If you really develop the feelings your character has towards the empire, it can be a strong jumping board.
