I thought it was actually implied that something happened inside of Sil'dih and they wiped themselves out, but it was never made clear what it was. In fact it seemed almost like they were trying to suggest in some ways that Sil'dih wasn't wiped out or gone, but merely... elsewhere. I remember reading somewhere that they were run by a type of Magocracy, which might imply they could come back at some point.
