
The important thing, IMO, is to have an IC justification for those skills, especially if they seem a bit, well, "out of character."
So, if you're mostly a spellcaster and you pick up levels of, say, Gladiator, you'll want to have a reason why. Perhaps you wanted to be able to better defend yourself if taken by surprise in melee combat; perhaps you sought the glory of being a Gladiator, standing tall in the arena; maybe you just like the idea of standing as the bulwark, protecting your friends.
