Out of curiosity, what's your plan beyond raised by pirates?  Is the character looking for redemption of a past life or anything like that? You could always look back for inspiration and develop a story for becoming a paladin ala Cecil in FF IV for how she got the paladin abilities without going the full paladin/sultansworn story angle.
