I live in the US, but I also work odd hours, which leads me to believe we might have problems meeting. All the same, welcome to Gilgamesh! Sorry you've had trouble with the series - Every Final Fantasy game tends to be very different from one another, and XII wasn't the best received of the collection!
As for lore, there are (several) wikis that discuss the world from version 1.0 to this current version, A Realm Reborn. The new development team kept the lore from the previous game, and has picked up the world five years after the events of the Calamity that ended the prior version.
There are several places to point a person to teach them about the lore, but the easiest way to learn it is to progress through the main missions. You end up learning quite a bit about the world and the happenings between version 1.0 and now from NPCs who have effectively lived through it. There's enough there that you can understand what's happened without needng an encyclopedic knowledge of events.
Also, for a quick Overview of Important Things, there's a nifty timeline thread I found with the Googlez.
