My point was that everyone (or, okay, a lot of people) in real life owns something, or even multiple somethings, that they obtained for literally no other reason other than it was awesome. Why do I have a baneling/zergling reversible plushy sitting on top of my computer tower? Because it's freaking awesome, that's why.
Therefor, it makes perfect sense for a character in RP to have something for no reason other than they think it's cool. Is it shallow for the character? Sure. Is it shallow in terms of RP? Certainly not; it's realistic. A person is not going to have some deep and meaningful motivation behind everything they own.
