In all seriousness though, character names are the easiest things to work around in RP. Â You can always think up some kind of a lore-friendly way to explain it. Â And as far as conflict goes? Â Every time Coatleque is forced to say "Ser Mcbeef" in public, her blood pressure goes up. Â It's fun.

Seriously though. Natalie is the best example of taking something you did at character creation and RUNNING with it. Whenever I need a success story in that department I always draw reference to her.

However it's a good point. Much like real life, not everyone in Eorzea will fit the mold. Figuring out why your character doesn't is a crazy good RP chance.

For example maybe he's the strongest in the tribe, and no one can take his title... but he's infertile and too embarrassed to go back to his tribe.

Or maybe his whole tribe died. Or maybe he's an imposter. Or maybe he's delusional, or maybe he's the strongest but he likes men and got ran out for not doing his duty.

So many interesting ways you could spin it!

As for me, yeah haha I had no plans of RPing when I made this character. I started talking to people and really liked it. It gave me a chance to ask some questions about my character though!

For example, she has a non-miqote name because she didn't want to have anything to do with her culture. Why is that? Because she had a horrible existence in her tribe. Why is that? etc etc.

So don't be sad! Use it as a chance to ask questions about your character. Some people will be snide but fuck 'em.

I remember reading that. Might be in the mi'qo naming conventions posts even.

I don't believe so -- or at least, I haven't seen one. Per the naming conventions post, "Males do not take family names, as they are each considered the â€˜originsâ€™ of new families. In place of a family name, they are given a title that denotes their tribe, and their position within it." If you weren't nunh, you wouldn't have the title, and therefore your surname would be Tia.

That said, if a male attempts to create his own tribe by splitting off (as opposed to establishing new territory), he might declare himself nunh but have no women in his breeding group. In that case, he'd be nunh in name only and an outcast from his culture.

At any rate, the fluidity of male Seeker titles makes the fact that we can't get name changes fairly annoying. Sad

Except that the Miqo'te naming conventions material from Square Enix makes it clear that the Nunh usually isn't the leader of the tribe. Of course, SE throws a wrench in the works by showing everyone a U-tribe Nunh who is, but he's also a warrior of light and so I've always envisioned that to be the reason he's the leader, not because he's a Nunh.

While I agree that the only in-game example of a nuhn is a bad one, as far as overall naming convention lore goes. I would just like to clarify that the U tribe nuhn is not a warrior of light, but a member of the company of heroes that defeated Titan (and leviathan, altho they weren't clear on if that was the same company of heroes)

That's exactly what I'm referring to. Lots of people seem to consider the Nunh the leaders of the tribe when it's usually on a per tribe basis.

U'odh Nunh seems like an outlier than anything else because of his role in the Company of Heroes and helping to defeat Titan which is most likely the reason for him being Nunh.

Your going about this all wrong. Of course you can be a Nunh on your own. Kind of like how Captain Jack Sparrow is a captain without a ship.

He could be the leader of his own tribe, which consists of just himself. He could have had a falling out after a cheated victory with another male, he could have been ambushed and left for dead, or framed and imprisoned, only to escape by faking his death after having spent years in solitude in a cell? Learning from and old lalafell about the outside world and culture, and how to fight to gain his revenge.

You could do anything with it. Use your head!

Much like Natalie, I also have a non-lore friendly name. However, this is a character I've played for many years and decided to adapt into the lore using very minor tweaks to his backstory.

The most interesting incarnation of Vaughn was when I had him as a companion, basically a high-class whore. Where does this fit into FFXIV lore? I did a bit of searching and found that Ul'dah has a nasty reputation for slave trade and brothels (as does Limsa, which comes in later).

Second, I realized (quite a ways into playing) that "Vaughn Antain" is not a lore-friendly name. But, this can be explained away as being a slave companion, owned by a hyur Mistress, further centering him in Ul'dah.

When Vaughn lived life as a pirate, I wondered how this would fit in to the pieces I was making my puzzle out of. So I came to the conclusion that he was bought by a pirate captain. His link to Limsa Lominsa, where he eventually found himself on multiple occasions.

Now, I know all this is over-simplified, but this is the thought process before really fleshing out the character. As stated before, I already had an established character that I wanted to adapt into FF before I really read the lore, and am still learning how to adapt things I've already RPed (as in, how can a slave know how to read and write when the populous is generally illiterate?).

But these little discoveries will help you grow as a a character and an RPer, and as others said, can only be a good thing! Good luck on your own story and I hope to meet you in character as well!
