I've only ever used it once on a player. This individual made multiple accounts, posing as diffrrent people, to try and both ICly and OOCly tear my character from his lover and break our RP partnership so that they'd have a chance with my character.

I felt it was appropriate at the time. Rather than announce it or make a thread about it, I just threw this person on there and moved on. Things have been fine ever since. A post was made elsewhere to inform other FCs of this person's behavior, but it was kept off the RPC for obvious reasons

I've literally never blacklisted anyone in any game.

Fact is, blacklisting a gil spammer is pointless because those characters get deleted within a few hours. As for players, my responses range between not caring enough to blacklist someone, and not blacklisting them because I can't let them win. And believe me, as someone who's been on the other side of it a time or two, I can assure you that when you blacklist someone who you feel is harassing you, they will always view it as an admission of defeat.

I suppose I'm just far too prideful to use it.

There is exactly one (1) roleplayer I've ever had to blacklist. The rest of 'em are all gil-sellers or.. very sad and angry people who don't RP. The few (very few) times I've butted heads with a fellow member of the RPC community, we were thankfully able to resolve things without any unnecessary drama.

I'll admit. I used to blacklist a lot of gil sellers, but they always change into new names or have their character (Deleted) in my list. So I stopped bothering and I stopped using /reply since I accidentally mistell towards gil sellers when they ninja PM me.

I've only Blacklisted like 4-5 people. But it's because they really pushed my buttons when I asked them to stop and leave me alone and they kept talking trash to me. They ended up trying to find out my skype info which was annoying too. But yeah. You really have to push my buttons to blacklist you at the end. I tend to unblacklist after few weeks because I get over it or forgive someone for their behaviors.

I blacklist gil spammers so that I can have the relief of not hearing them right then, haha.  Don't care if they get deleted, I'll then clean them off my blacklist.  And I haven't seen a lot of gil spammers on Balmung, but on my other server (Lamia), the spam is so bad I have to clear out my blacklist of characters that aren't even deleted yet just to put more in.  They are definitely not deleted within hours on the lower-population servers.  I played there for 9 months without half of my 200+ blacklisted gil spammers being deleted.

I don't think blacklisting is "letting someone win" because the fact that you are moving on with your life and not letting them be relevant to you is what's important.  It's not about winning, it's about what's best for you to continue playing by your own terms.

I could give two shits if they think they've "won" something by me blacklisting them.  If they believe that, then there are a lot more personal issues going on in their life than their short-lived harassment of me.  If anyone sees harassing someone to the point of being blacklisted or blocked on some website/game as "winning", they are at a level of pathetic that I can't comprehend.

Minus the gilsellers/spammers, I typically don't blacklist until I've reached the point where my patience has run out. There's plenty of people running around that a normal person would blacklist, but I'm kinda voyeuristic to people's bad behaviours and I also like to know when someone's talking about me.

Sometimes, I -will- temp-blacklist someone who is RPing nearby and being a distraction to my RP; not because they're being offensive, but just because what they're doing IS distracting to what I'm trying to concentrate on. These people, I also write their names down on a piece of paper by my keyboard so I remember to remove them once I'm free to have distractions, or to quick-reference the name if they approach before I'm at a point where I can remove them. It's not a punishment, it's just for my sanity.

As for reasons/examples for why I'll actually blacklist:

97% of my blacklist are gilsellers/spammers. I've experienced getting gilseller /tell spam from the same character multiple times over the course of a couple hours, and every once in a while I'll run into a zone where one is spamming in /shout and /yell. So, might as well just blacklist a name right away. Every few months, I go through and remove the first thirty or so of those names and all the (Deleted) entries -- by this time, these 'characters' are on accounts that have been caught and banned, so they're just taking up space.

The next actual 2.5% are the following:

"Tiny" -- This guy used to hound me to join his FC, and he didn't take 'no thanks' or 'not interested' as a good enough answer. Didn't matter how many times I told him to stop trying to invite me, I could expect upwards to five invites a day from him.  So now, the first thing I do once I've gotten control of a new character is to blacklist him before he can start bugging me. Which might seem moot now since I have a FC that I can join with all my characters... but there was a few times where "Tiny" got to me while I was waiting for someone with invite privileges to come back from AFK.

"On the /punt list" -- I was asked to join a LS that I had been told was for OOC RP event planning among FC leaders and their co-leaders/seconds-in-command. Joined... and slowly started getting hints that the LS was going to be an IC one with some REALLY bizarre ideas and themes that myself and my co-leader had no interests in. Eventually we left, and both of us got some harassment from the LS leader and a few other members for doing so.

"Guttermouth" -- The only person who has the honor of being on my blacklist because of their RP. I get it that swearing has a place in RP, I swear IRL and IC, but when every third word out of your mouth is 'c--t' and my polite /tell request to please tone it down a bit is met with a LOT of venom... yeah. Took me a while to feel okay with blacklisting, as this was another RPer and I hate missing half a conversation when I lurk, but in the end this person's RP was just so repulsive to me that I finally hit that button.

Which leaves that last .5%...

"Ugh" -- "Ugh" has the dubious honors of being someone that I blacklist often, but need to take off the blacklist during RP because he RP's often with my group. Sometimes, I forget to put "Ugh" back on blacklist until after I've reached the point where I wish I could just jump through the computer and strangle him. My hatred of this person is long-standing and game-spanning, but I like the rest of my RP group and I'm not about to let "Ugh" run me off.

I have never, and hope I never have to block anyone for actual RP stuff... (but I understand why it happens! just hope it doesn't happen to me) I have a hair trigger for blacklisting people for any sort of intentional harassment.  Being obnoxious (not ICly, that's like okay!), spamming, standing on people, etc.  If I see any of that you're blacklisted, and that's that.

I think Aya's referencing a very specific group of griefers. An accidental stand-on is different than moving yourself to stand on someone, then following them after they move to stand on them again, etc. They need not be named here though, as that would probably give them the satisfaction they seek.

You misunderstand me!  This is a type of harassment where people follow others around always standing upon them, or right up against them, trying to disrupt RP.  It has nothing to do with zoning in on someone ^_^

To Franzie: I know who you're talking about, but sadly this is not strictly limited to them.

That's harsh, broseph. I mean, I'd try to explain the circumstances surrounding my involvement in that sort of thing, but it's my experience that first impressions are usually permanent so... eh, it's not the first time somebody's held the opinion that I was pathetic. So I guess we'll just roll with that.

Gil spammers often re-spam (my experience when I have not immediately added one to my blacklist), so it is quite helpful to add them, especially now that its just a button click away Smile

I do not care what a griefer thinks.  I do not care about his or her motivation, I do not care about what he or she is trying to accomplish, and I certainly do not care about what she or she thinks about "winning" or "defeating" me.  All I care about is having a fun time without being bothered by the harassment, and that is best accomplished by ignoring it, which is most easily (and somewhat permanently) achieved via the blacklist.

I have 'soft' blacklisted a few roleplayers that I just wont interact with IC if I can truly help it. I blacklist the shit out of people that are mega-twats OOC (who also dont rp at all) and gil spammers.

No no, I am not saying that you are pathetic.  I am saying people who intentionally harass others, and are then blacklisted and think highly of themselves for it, are pathetic.

So unless you're running around purposefully getting blacklisted for harassment, or enjoying getting blacklisted for harassment, it doesn't apply to you.

I blacklist whenever I feel like it. Typically, it's gil sellers or people who spam emotes nearby when I'm trying to RP (nothing against those ones, spam /dance as you please! I just gotta put them on ignore so I can read my RP). Otherwise, there's maybe one or two people on my blacklist who've been bent on harassing me and are there for that reason, but in less severe cases I usually keep those sort unblocked in case they say something that can be reported to the GM's instead for a more satisfying solution.

I wouldn't call blacklisting a last method, though. While I personally don't use it very liberally, anyone is welcome to blacklist whoever they please for whatever reasons suit them, there's really no justification needed.
