Did you choose Telluride as a (sur)name as homage to Telluride, CO and their fantastic bluegrass festival they have every year?

I didn't know about the bluegrass festival, but I'll add that into the mix - and yes, the city was the original inspiration.

The name was originally used by my old character in Fallen Earth, and would have been used in The Secret World if I'd ended up playing that. It was meant to evoke the character of Colorado in those personas - a little off the beaten path, independent minded, and with a touch of chill, in every sense of the word.

It had been meant for The Secret Wolrd to be an Americanization of a Germano-Slavic sounding name, "Tehlreit", when I was designing a family of rare book collectors and hunters of the paranormal, who had immigrated to North America a few generations past.

So, it connects to the city, and to my own RP roots and stories. I wear it proudly.

Very nice! I like the connection with the ol' germano-slavic bit. That would have been an interesting char. Just couldn't get into TSW?

I had started preparing my characters and their backstories, and had already started doing TSW-based forum RP, about a year before the game was due to release. Later, several friends got into the beta (I didn't), but everything they said about the game itself was summed up by "meh." I was disappointed, but didn't want to be the only person I knew playing it, so I went to Rift instead.

It was a shame, yes, because I had one hell of a backstory and dozens of plot arcs that could have been put to use.

I think i may have seen you rping with some of my FC mates a few nights back in the quicksand.  Do the names Oswain and Nathanial sound familiar to you? If so, the i was the Seeker Miqo standing at the railing, pretending not to be interested when in truth her was.  xD

Welcome to Blamung.

I also need to introduce myself sometime soon.

I do indeed remember the names. Besides, it's pretty easy to spot someone only -pretending- to be disinterested. They tend to try too hard, but that's the point, isn't it? Cool

That is entirely the point.  I was hopping someone would call him out on it, but it never got to that point cause everyone had to go.  =/  maybe some other times if another 'story time' happens in the Quicksand.  xD

I've been resolving to make a bigger point of looking for RPers who drop those cues, i.e. "So-and-so does this in an obviously wistful way, waiting for the next awesome RPer to take notice" and invite them over to a table or go harass them. Over the years, I've met some incredibly fun people doing so.

That said, I also find that simply biting the bullet and presenting oneself works pretty darned well. I don't think anyone who -doesn't- want to RP lingers in the Quicksand long enough to drop hints.

In other words, you're waiting around instead of doing... the very thing you want others to do! Big Grin

I find it also helps to watch actively for ways to enter a conversation by having a character's opinion on it ready to voice. We can't burst into every conversation, but remember that, except for the most self-assured folks, most of the people in an open RP area want the same thing - someone to approach.

Consider it this way - anyone who goes to The Quicksand for a conversation, and would take offense at others listening in or finding a way to join in somehow, lacks sufficient common sense and awareness to deserve their feeling of offense. The only other reason people go to open RP areas is to "advertise" their characters, and such folks have no right to complain when others actually respond to their "advertising." Those who really want a private conversation will leave the place once they have it!

I tend to take a far more IC-view on it. Bars draw the most diverse people. Some just want a drink, others want shelter, others want to party hard through the night with their friends. Whatever the case may be, I find nothing more..bothersome when you have people in there just..existing, not really knowing why their character is there or why they are there beyond 'I wanna rp'.

The moment you add specific reason to your visit to a bar, you already create the circumstance for you to be able to create rp in that scenario.

For example;

If my characters goes to the bar depressed, trying to drink some pain away, he'll obviously be the sulking dude in the corner, sipping solemnly and in need for someone to listen perhaps. Just make a few emotes out of that, and you might have your first approach.

A different example;

My character just came from a long journey throughout Thanalan and is positively exhausted, looking for some drink, food and shelter. He might stick around for an entire eve, coming into the place with bags and all other things he carried throughout his travel. Again, emote those details, and you might get people pay attention to it.

I guess the main part is to never just 'RP'. Your character is supposed to be a living,breathing rendition of an actual being, with goals, ambitions, and reasons for his actions. Even if it is as simple as Thirsty > Drink, if you always keep a tab on that, you have enough to work with, and never run into the corner of 'what do I do now?'

All very good points.  =)

If my main character wasn't indisposed ICly at the moment, i'm sure he'd be in the quicksand, getting drunk.  His mood is very dark/sour/depressed after receiving some bad news, but he's presently off somewhere in the shroud.  xD

On the other hand, Jia, my usual bar creeper isn't one to openly approach people.  He's rather emotionless/closed off, so he just generally lurks and people watches.  And the last character i play frequently isn't one to hang out in bars all that often.  so  Things are a bit complicated with some of my characters.  xD (also yes, i'm an altaholic, don't judge me.  =P )

Judge you? I've already got four slots with toons in them after only about 2.5 months of play. Nathan is the only one that is active in RP, but two of the others have stories and personalities already, and simply lack levels and time investment, and the fourth is a concept that I set aside that will build up from the others if/when I start to apply them.

If it also helps to set your soul at ease, I had 17 character slots filled in SWTOR, built up over 2.5 years. Now, five of those were simply Republic-side dopplegangers of my Empire family, and the remaining seven were side-players in bit stories now and then, or storyline boosters, or toons made just to let me see all the class quests.

I think you'll find dozens, of similarly guilty alt-lovers around here...
