I love SRPGs. Fire Emblem (if it can really be considered one) and Final Fantasy Tactics are two of my favorites.

Advanced Wars! I played a mean Grit (didn't everyone?) but was pretty lousy at the strategy part. I loved that two allowed for custom maps; my favorite was 3 very-poorly-supplied teammates against one super-decked-out AI. You started with one mech and a lander with your HQ on a remote island and had to creep onto the mainland and start guerillaing bases and factories. Lots of trees and mountains to make Fog of War a big factor and man, so many afternoons trying to take down Super Kanbei on that map.

Advance Wars DS is still in my library for a reason.

My tactics for tactical/strategy (RP)Gs.

Power overwhelming.

And not just SCI's console command cheat. But grind grind grind away if possible. Kill everything. Level up allll the way.

Sounds like my Tactics Ogre/FFT strategy. Have big dude, attack with big dude for big numbers. Killing the enemy before they can hurt you, that's proactive healing, y'know!

I... also kinda liked those games because you got to name your units and such, which gave a more personal feel to them. I think I'd be into more RPGs if I could customize my characters more like that. Could be why I love dressing up my MMORPG characters so much.

I used to abuse the versus matches in the original TO: LUCT, too. Get a Golem up levels, and then have him stand around and do nothing while my lowbies beat the everloving crap out of him. Cleric on hand to heal him when he gets low and EVERYONE gets experience!

(Also, my army in the TO:LUCT PSP release was the Holy Order of Operations, and that will never not be funny to me. Divide, to the front! Multiply, tend to Exponent!)

I did like Max for that reason. I especially loved Kanbei and Colin tag-teaming for the "lel I buy max-power stuff for half price!" gimmick.

But no, my best strategy was fifty million ranged units covering each other on the way to your base and just laying waste to anything they could see.

I'm actually baffled as to how all of you lovely people (just based on what I read in this thread, perhaps I've overlooked) managed to overlook my absolute favorite series ever:

Shadow Hearts.

It has yet to be topped by any RPG I've ever played and everytime I play it I notice something different. The story is creepy and unsettling, lined with lots of dark humor and for every typical trope there's a boatload of shining moments.

It also has a evolved gameplay mechanic that I believe Legend of Legaia/Dragoon started- called the Judgement Ring. Along with a Sanity meter, you'll need that.

The main characters don't use swords, they punch things. They also turn into horrible monsters and wreck shit. In one of the games, you bust Al Capone out of prison and in another you participate in 'The Man Festival'. A wrestling match where the losers... well I suppose it depends on your tastes. How about vampires that fight with sign posts and tables? Maybe you'd like to talking about the merits of necromancy?

I won't go as far to say it's all high concept stuff, but it's entertaining and full of twists I never saw coming. The characters are still better (subjective) in this series than years of FF and it's sadly never going to continue. I felt more feelings than anyone should ever have a right to feel.

I mean seriously, this wrestler rips out a pillar off a building and carries it around as his weapon. There's a ninja that uses a cactus as a sword. That's the tame stuff.

It's horror themed, that in itself was enough to attract me. If you haven't played it, or someone else mentioned it and I missed it- you should go play it. I mean that, you really should.

Currently working my way through Rune Factory 4. Once I beat the story, its on to Mass Effect 2 for me! That being said, I've always had little contact with games outside of MMOs, but Harvest Moon: More Friends of Mineral Town has got to take my number one spot right in front of Dragon Age: Origins.

I was too tired to really get into it, but I loved Covenant. It is the only SH I've played. I think what really struck me about the game was how effortlessly it balanced drama and comedy. The funny scenes were genuinely funny and often unexpected, plus unlike a lot of rpg, integrated into the story.

SpoilerWho ever expected rasputin to say "No, you will BITE ME" in retort?
Yet it was still at its heart a really tragic story with a somewhat painful ending. I was impressed by how the game handled the idea of grief, very mature. Plenty of rpg have tragic deaths, but few seriously tackle the matter of learning to cope in the aftermath of one. Yuri was generic at first glance, but anti-hero protagonists were actually kinda rare in rpgs those days, and not only that, the game wasn't afraid to make him vulnerable and yet still badass. (I especially liked his scene before the Dark Seraphim optional boss.) And of course the party members were memorable. I just can't wrap my brain around how a game where you trade gay porno cards for doll clothes to dress up your dirty old man's marionette could handle such a serious story well. And of course Joachim, practically the best rpg party member ever, omg. I lost it when he found his new weapons. "Hmm. Nice tuna."

Speaking of which, the game's attention to detail was absurd. Literally every item and every monster in the game had a few sentences describing them and mostly unique artwork. Like what the heck, where did Nautilus find the time to do this? Things like Joachim's weapons in particular were pretty hilarious, such as the tuna that froze itself to wait until a cure for its fatal illness was found.

For srpg, the games I played a lot of were Valkyria Chronicles (really really fun and pretty game), pretty much every main line Disgaea, Soul Nomad (An unusually serious NIS game.), and Front Mission 3, 4, even the 5th game, which I never managed to properly patch to translate the Japanese.

For the series of games listed here (Persona, breath of fire, Suikoden, Tales), which ones did you enjoy a lot?

For Breath of Fire fans, which Nina did you like the most? Was she winged or not?

For the Tales fans, did you purchase some of the wardrobe DLCs like I did? >>

I actually liked BoF3's Nina the most. She was a strong-willed girl who went out and got stuff done. Sure, she started a bit sheltered and naive, but she grew up from that (in part due to traveling with Ryu) to become quite the self-sufficient lady. Oh, and yeah, she had wings but she couldn't really... FLY with them.

... She also had a really catchy theme that I always find myself humming when I'm in a good mood.

It almost seemed like a bit of a step back with her representation in 4 and Dragon Quarter, comparatively. At least IV had Ursula and Deis (and, to a degree, Mami) to sufficiently cover the lost ground. It also had a drunken dog swordsman, macho man Kahn, and ERSHIN, but we're sticking to the female characters here.

(BoF3 also had Peco, who is one of my favorite characters ever. Pukyuuu~)

My strategy was usually to hit hard, hit fast in those games and air superiority.

ALOT of helicopters, bombers and fighters. Not much can stand up against you if you dominate the skys with alot of airborn firepower to back you up.

Also, I forgot to mention this, but I used to play the epic battle fantasy flash games when they were still a thing. Epic Battle Fantasy 4 got released on steam and is on sale for like 4 dollars, but man, that was a very good game for its time.
