You are correct. This is why online roleplayers, with great frequency, attempt to organize storylines and the community on a scale beyond their ability to effectively manage it, as evidenced here.

Since you mention history, I should point out that my understanding of the history of these arrangements has led not to good roleplay and interconnected storylines, but power-politicking amongst guild leaders, self-aggrandizement on the part of the organizer(s), and a useful shield for genuinely abusive and predatory behavior. The idea that roleplay is somehow made smaller and less-interconnected without such meetings, summits, councils, conclaves, tribunals, or any of the number of different terms they've gone by in the past hardly merits concern.Â

On consideration, perhaps you are incorrect after all. History repeats, it seems, regardless of whether people know it or not.

I am going to assume people are not reading the whole thread as we keep getting this doomsday argument and I have posted twice the rough outline of this event. So let me post this here again for a 3rd time. If we seriously need to have these things aired, I ask you take it upon yourself to create a discussion thread. This is not the place for that talk as this is an event thread. Please take this arguing outside.

Third: Intermission. As for "telling" people to plan airships, you misunderstand. I was suggesting that as an example of what you could do in the intermission. You could talk to people you haven't in a while. You can go Bio, Whatever you want, its an intermission.

Fourth: The Speaker does some nice closing remarks, and we're done.

I think the word "Summit" makes people think superpowers running the world. But its just a word. This is basically an in-person version of Making Connections, you are correct. And yes maybe that is unnecessary. But this will be far more fun/interesting then just skimming a forum.

No one is trying to run anyone. No one is in danger of being told what to do. But I'll tell you, people will have fun. They will bump into people they haven't seen in a bit. They will have an idea of who does what, so when they need a "xyz" for an rp they will know who to look for. Its purely networking. What is it Freelance has as a title? "Not the President of RP"? This isn't the congress of rp. Just some groups who would otherwise not interact getting together ooc for an hour or two to get to know eachother. Its a mixer people.

I see. Well if you are set to distrust me or the idea of what we are doing, again I use the term "infomercial", all I can say is relax, and if you are the slightest bit nervous please there is no need to go, but feel free to watch the stream to put your mind at ease.

Also totally off topic, I am curious since you brought up academia? In another life I was an Officer in the US Navy, and am now a registered nurse. As effect to that I am blessed to have 3 bachelors degrees, one in Human Management, and one in Computer Systems Engineering (Hardware) from my Navy days, and of course my Science of Nursing. I don't meet alot of academics here. We should hang out and chat sometime, I love getting heady with others on high topics. You down?

You and others are welcome not to trust it, but this paranoia just makes people look more foolish then anything in this particular instance. If you don't like it? Don't show up/sign up. That simple. I'm hoping it's harmless. Harmless means unproductive. The real harm of these things is when people start putting their heads together. The itinerary and organization do seem to ensure that FCs can only have a minimum of actual contact outside of their actual speech, so perhaps I am wrong. Perhaps this hasÂ been sufficiently neutered out the gate.

Trust me man, I worked out checks and balances as best I could before even posting.

Here's what I am hopeful for ok, I'll give you an example. I got a pm stating that a fc wanted to go. They also stated their main thing is the fc runs an IC bookstore. I thought this is amazing, Erik would love something like this. Now barring the PM, I would honestly never had known there was such a fc with such a hook. Going to the Summit as one not organizing, when they hit the stage and said "we are XYZ..... and we have a IC bookstore" me being there, or someone being there that knows me would hear that and pass that info on to me.

Its not a planning board, everyone really needs to get that. FCs are very specific organisms, the Red Wings are military/covert Ops, we don't have a bookstore. Us sitting in on this will que us in to FCs that have things we may enjoy as rpers and players. By "setting our wears out" for everyone to see, maybe we can help someone, or someone can help us.

I'll go on public record now and say the RWs will say what we are, and then say "we are looking for a military doctor, and also we have talked with a few smaller FCs and talked about us smaller guys getting together to make airships. Any other small FCs want/need in on this?" And then we are sitting down and letting the next group talk. That's it.

I'm also uncertain what the value of watching a stream of pre-made macros describing guilds will be. As mixers go, holding one with parliamentary procedures and limited speaking times, coupled with severe restrictions on the number of members able to attend, don't seem like the best way to grasp the character of an FC's playstyle and membership. Especially when the actual organization of contact between FCs will most likely be done in private by the leaders themselves. I'd either be watching things I could see on the RPC or the kind of inter-group collusion that leads to people forming RP councils in earnest.

If you're harmless, that's all well and good. As I said, I'd prefer that. Past and frequent experience has shown me otherwise.

Not trying to be a pain, just seeking clarity, you said you get enough of that day to day. Do you mean the streaming and discussion or the scholarly dialog? I would really love to talk to someone about advancements that would both understand and appreciate them. But if you won't all well, I'll stick to my physics hangouts lol.

Oh humanities, I enjoined "Effects of Music" a history styled class.

Anyway back to the event, from several tells in-game I guess we will go with 3pm Eastern time. I'll update the thing

As someone who attended numerous summits during 1.0, I can assure you that these things are usually harmless.

Often times, it's simply a "hey, for those of you who don't know who we are and what we do, here it is. If you have any questions, let us know." And then there's a period of "So, is anyone noticing __________" in game and if so then, "What can we as leaders and members do about it." with a little bit of "Anyone have any idea for any cross FC plots we could get involved in" thrown in for good measure.

I will be one of the first people to put my foot down if it turns into anything nefarious. I'm a leader of a really small FC, and I don't let anyone overpower or talk over me, regardless of how "big" we are.

^ Pretty much this. I've seen what a harmful summit can do to an RP community along with devs that give zero fucks about their RPers, I'mlookingatyouArenaNet.

I came into this game not really knowing a thing about the RP community. I'm hoping to use this as a chance to learn about the FCs that are floating about, big and small, and seeing if there's any I can coordinate with.
