*THIS IS PURELY A SPECULATION THREAD,  OBVIOUSLY WE WILL FIND OUT MORE WHEN THE GAME COMES OUT! I STILL LOVE TO SPECULATE!*

that said. What's your take on Dark Knights? Are they similar to the rogue's guild? A clandestine group of people who mete out justice in accordance to a code?

or is it more Marvel/DC's New York City/Gotham, anyone can be a Dark Knight as long as they put on a funny costume and fight for their version of justice?

I personally hope its the latter, it will lead to more nuanced RP, any Dark Knight's "Justice Killing" will have to be scrutinized, will lead to conflict and schisms between Ishgardians and outsiders a like. Some Dark Knights could find themselves more sympathetic to the heretics, seeing Ishgard as too rotten to be saved.

the former.... eh, if they run a code, knowing how Square's been at it, their code is going to be, for all intents and purpose, objectively good aligned. So its hard to do conflict beyond "STOP BREAKING THE LAW, ASSHOLE!" And leaves the enemies of Dark Knights primarily to the most lawful of lawful goods. I know Orrin would be a silent supporter in this particular case

As far as I can tell on the little lore we have at the moment, Dark Knights are basically the Ishgardian answer to "who watches the watchmen?"

Too soon to know. We'll likely find out during their class quests.

This was kind of my take away on it as well.

In keeping with the theme of speculative lore talkings I'll probably say that they are likely individuals who've had enough and/or been dicked over enough to drop their flags and pick up the greatsword to 'deal with the issue'. The term 'Pariah' is used which makes me think that even the citizens they are trying to protect/save are perhaps afraid of them or don't understand their cause. It's sort of like the vigilante who kills a man who is a rapist even though he donates money to charities, feeds the poor, and defends his people with vigilance. Some may see it as a great wrong to lose this 'great man' but the Dark Knight knows he is someone who does horrible things in private, etc.

This is, overall, a very interesting take on an age old concept. I'm not sure I can really get behind the greatsword tank, myself, but I think I can easily say that I love the concept and it's one I've played in often before. I even planned on taking my character down a similar path (without the Dark Knight stuff) before this lore drop hit. I'm not sure if I'll still do it. Though I imagine that Dark Knights don't get to hold the monopoly on dispensing justice to bad people. =P

[Moderator Hardhat]

Please keep discussion on-topic. Image macros a.k.a. "memes" that don't further discussion can result in sudden derails. There was staff discussion on this, and the consensus was that images are fine so long as you're also furthering discussion on the topic or related notes. Otherwise we're just inviting folks to troll and/or derail threads in order to provoke the staff into locking them.

Thank you! <3

I can only assume that the Dark Knights are perhaps started by some group of disenfranchised former knights of the Holy See who decided to take corruption control into their own hands.

a la Batman, considering their current lore info.

The only missing piece is how their magical power works and where it's sourced from....

Personally hope they're the Faces of Mercy that were missing from 1.0.  They do sound like the secretive type, so it might come into play.  Will ask around with some of my static members when 3.0 hits, as their goals sound rather similar to what the group used to be.

I wonder if they'll just be confined to Ishgard, however? Or at least originate there, but can go anywhere...if so, Ul'dah could certainly use some dark knighting.

Well, it seems like their lore is pretty Ishgard-specific...but with their opening of the gates, I imagine that the tenants of the Dark Knights will perhaps spill in to Ul'dah?

...I mean, assuming the MSQ actually offers that up. Though thus far the story has been pretty insular.

It'd be awesome for RP purposes at least, though...

My guess is that they're organized loosely - in that there's a central hierarchy, but agents can operate on their own for long periods of time without having to check in.

Chances are the story will involve the WoL being asked to bring the Dark Knights' brand of justice throughout their travels, kind of like a Free Paladin still being one, but not one beholden to the Sultana.
