Do you even Final Fantasy brah?(05-06-2015, 10:03 AM)Spiritual Machine Wrote: What, no one here gets their powers from friendship? I thought this was a Japanese RPG.
That's more a typical Western trope though, is it not? Like with Captain Planet and My Little Pony.
Actually there are a lot more examples of that trope being played straight from Anime/Manga than Western shows on the TV Tropes page for it. Especially when it comes to those Magical Girl ones--they never quite have the power to shoot the biggest lasers without charging up the ol' Inner Monologue o' Friendship.
Captain Planet was way more realistic actually. To defeat pollution, you put together five magical rings, and by their powers combined you summon someone else to deal with it.
On topic, I tend to make characters who have limited or typical abilities but the intellect to use them in creative ways. A lot of crazy stuff can be deduced out of the lore for what people are basically capable of if they try. Now that can be more of a challenge than leaning on a more nebulous source of power or experience, but that's part of the fun.
Oh, I thought you meant friendship being an actual power, like "pew pew, I wield the power of Friendship!", and not the actual moral boost friendship can give you in a realistic way.

Franz cheated. There's [mostly broken] Garlean tech that gave him aetheric ability. Combine with some other life experiences and said tech being unstable, and well.....I keep the lore-bendiness in small circles.
Day to day, Franz is probably powered by good food and drink. Else, he gets grumpy. |

Training. Lots and lots of TRAINING. Like combine SEALs, IDF, Spetznaz, and the SPARTANS (the Greek ones) from the age of 12, stir in a near fanatical belief in a warrior goddess, a never-ending overly powerful enemy (dragons), and a license to murder as many of these as you possibly can in a short amount of time and you'd have about the level/intensity of training we're looking at, here. No magical 'awakening', no magical items that do all the work, and no amplifier artifacts. Just good ol' fashioned hard work and study.
Later on he acquired a soul crystal from his deceased sister (that he killed) which belonged to their Grandfather. Though the way I play out soul crystals is more of "hey this is the book of techniques but if you're an unskilled mook then it's useless to you". I.e. to be a warrior like the Dragoon you already have to be an effective fighter etc. Nothing comes for free in my writings lol. |

(This post was last modified: 05-06-2015, 01:44 PM by D'aito Kuji.)
D'aito Kuji has to have some kind of unusual strength and resistance to damage but she doesn't know how or why. Â Neither her sire nor her mother displayed any unusual strength beyond what Miqo'te are generally known for. Â I've left that a mystery for the character. Â It's probably just a fluke genetic mutation that gave her double muscles (muscular hypertrophy) although that's difficult to see under her armor. Â She was the runt of her line, the smallest Miqo'te in the tribe and typically smaller than most in general. Â While initially leading to bullying, once she took control of her strength she was quickly left at peace.
She was trained in hunting and melee fighting by several of her aunts and sisters. She simply has to have something going on to be able to do some of the thing she does. She's no where near as strong as she's represented in the game mechanics but I prefer her to have twice to three times the strength of a typical female Miqo'te. Â This allows her to carry her pack and her ax, slay all kinds of beasts, and deal with poachers and pirates. She can also jump down from heights that would kill others (a game mechanic that I do keep IC) Her resistance to injury might be innate or an artifact of her armor. But she's not invulnerable. Â She's still dealing with the recovery of her nearly fatal beatdown a few moons ago. I pretty much ignore most of the magical game mechanic stuff for D'aito Kuji. Â But she will use potions and whatnot to assist her when needed. I'm just so unfamiliar with fantasy stuff that it's prolly best to keep D'aito grounded more in reality. |

Most of Erik's "power" are from devices or machines. Though some are genetic and from practice as well.
The Lybra Eye Comes from his false aether-crystal carved eye. Made by a joint effort of both the goldsmith and alchemist guilds in Ul'dah, the eye has three distinct abilities. The first is that despite being made of crystal, when it is in his socket, the aether of the eye and his body sink up, glamouring the eye to appear life-like and granting him full normal vision. The second ability is once removed Erik can still see through it up to a malm. The final ability is the "lybra vision" he has upon concentrating. This allows him to see injuries in people, see aether in the area, and (as an extension of the health scan) know if a person is lying to him. Operative Ring A ring made by his friend Fao, a member of the Flames' R&D department from notes found in Erik's family journal. The ring acts in a similar way to the aether transporters, converting his armor and weapons to aetheric energy, but instead of sending the energy to a new location, the ring stores the energy. This allows Erik to be always battle ready, and to have quick access to weapons in an emergency. The ring holds his armor, several weapons, and his Flames uniform. It is in the shape of the Tipping Scales ring. Removing the ring will disarm him, as the effects cannot be activated remotely. Operative Earrings A set of earrings in the shape of the Tipping Scales Earrings, they act as a multi-channel pearl organizer. The earrings also have the ability to jam and/or tap into linkpearl channels and listen in, something usually reserved for Garlean lines. It also maintains a rudimentary experimental translator function that works as often as it does not. Designed for communication with foreigners as well as beast tribes, it is not dependable. Operative Bracelet Recently acquired from Immortal Flames R&D, the gold bracelet with the Flames' logo is a multi-use device. It can generate a small holographic HUD over his wrist, showing time, a compass, maps of an area, as well as information on current missions. Backwards engineered from imperial tech, it is highly experimental, most notably in its most unusual ability. The bracelet in an emergency can act as a portable teleport device, accessing the aetheric network. The teleport is only one per charge, leaving the device useless after. The device can only be charged in Sable Hall's War Room, or Flame Hall. Heightened Senses, Agility & Speed Though nowhere near elezen levels, the small bit of wildwood heritage Erik has from his mother make him more agile and quick then a large highlander of his build should be. Like an agile midlander in a highlander's body, Erik can confuse an opposite by surprising them with sudden bursts of speed. Also blessed with heightened sense, he cannot hear or see as well as an elezen, but a bit better then a hyur. His genetic skills are not super human, but because he looks full blooded highlander (except for the pale wildwood skin), they are an advantage he uses as an enemy would not suspect them. Combat Skills Short ans sweet, nineteen years of aetheric and martial combat training from the mercenary armies and later the Immortal Flames, including both direct and covert combat training. And ten years under the training of his father in Ala Mhigo and his mentor Tellah. * Forgot my earrings |

Verad is funny and generally not a giant prick so people are willing to do things for him.

Erik, you have better tech than Chao does.
That aside, on the earlier topic about the power of friendship, I draw up short of necessarily claiming that as part of the powerset behind R'tahz, but he did learn new skills from Curious Gorge and a retired capital-D Dragoon because of his desire to protect J'karu. From childhood til young adult age 18 his father's teachings working on ships and learning how to survive
Zach is blessed by light but only relied on the echo thrice. Thanks to studying as a child he understands Arcanistry magic with mathematical formulas. He learned how to use healing spells thanks to a Mognificent Mogtome Bible dedicated to Great King Moogle Mog XII. Finally thanks to a trauma of being on death's door*The rest of this isn't confirmed til I know more about dark knight's skills and lore* he has post war trauma and is embued with his aetheral form thus (Hopefully) able to manipulate the emotions as dark energy. Phyiscally he's above average since he keeps in shape with adventuring and his work as a shipwright but he likes using his brains over brawn. Plus thanks to merchant skills plus adventuring he tidied up a nice sum to back him up.*less risk of dying that way.* |

Aside from that she is effectively useless. |

Nothing all that special. No magitek or some other power source.
Aeron merely knows what he knows, the usage of a sword through tutelage from childhood to the point where he's prominent enough to simply stick with it and properly defend himself. |
