Greetings again, folks~
I feel like a newbie at roleplaying and feel it to be an appropriate title for now.
I'm really unsure how to roleplay with groups. It makes me anxious just thinking about diving in with others.
What advice would you lovely folks have for me?
I have two Alts I'm on a bit often right now.
Luluza Luza; Currently around Ul'dah.
Ismania Tsune; Currently around Gridania

I've noticed that Ul'dah has quite a large population of roleplayers.
Is just jumping in social acceptable? Should I send folks a tell? How can you notice a roleplayer from just gamers? I know on Ismania I got noticed just by walking around. Made a friend, but he hasn't been on at the same time.
It's a tad strange, I think, but I fancy watching others in the midst of their roleplays. The various personalities and stories are so nice~
Sorry for being such a ranter! I'm just really hoping to roleplay, but I think my.. shyness works against me.

If you're trying to find out who is and is not an RPer, try targeting them, then right clicking their name and selecting "Examine."

In the upper left corner there might be a word bubble. If you click it it'll have a little message. This is someone's "Search Info." A lot of RPers will mention that they're, well, an RPer in it. Not everyone, but a fair amount. A lot of folks will also put "Walk up RP welcome" or something similar in there. That usually means they're fair game to just strike up RP with.

More, though, a great way to meet folks is to attend the events that are held. Check out the Calendar tab in the RPC navigation at the top of the page to see some of the regularly held events. Additionally, you can go into "Balmung Events" section and see what else is coming up. Going to events gives you a common thing to walk up to folks and start talking about.

My life is a chip in your pile. Ante up!

That's amazing advice! I typically examine folks, but I didn't know about that information. Thank you so much for that help.

Hello there, welcome! Big Grin

Is just jumping in social acceptable? Should I send folks a tell?

Jumping in is perfectly fine! Sending a /tell is good, too, and may be considered more polite to some people! Either way, though, you can't go wrong!

How can you notice a roleplayer from just gamers? I know on Ismania I got noticed just by walking around. Made a friend, but he hasn't been on at the same time.

The tidbit about the search info is helpful. I'd also try to learn what FC tags belong to RP FC's. It's also helpful to attend RP events on the server (keep an eye on the calendar and the events forum here). Seeing people walking instead of running is also usually a good sign, or you can just approach people you see already making RP posts. It's a bit of extra work and not everyone has one, but if you're eyeing someone and wondering if they RP, you can search for their character's wiki or a profile on here.

(Maybe poor wording?) I changed it a bit, I hope you don't mind! Tongue

It isn't entirely accurate, for example my character Aris has a name that doesn't fit lalafell law, and I know many people who have a name like 'Albus Carbuncle' but got into roleplaying later or go by a different IC alias. Also, my char is a crafter, so if someone was crafting something I'd take it with a grain of salt personally.
* In regards to end game gear, (for example full sets like High Allagan or Scylla) they're sometimes avoided because 'lore wise' most characters wouldn't have them. However a way to get around that is that the person might have a replica or inspired design, so again it isn't completely accurate.

However, these are some good points in general by Nebbs if you're trying to figure out who is in character and who isn't. Smile

The best way I've found to recognise roleplayers is if they're walking around, as you've seen already. If people are standing in popular RP areas that's usually a sign they're waiting to be approached as well. Lots of people LOVE walk ups, but if you're uncertain sending a /tell to ask if someone is available and whatever else you want to ask is just as good (and sometimes helpful to make sure you're not interrupting them).

There are lots of lovely people on here as well, sending a message to them and prearranging roleplay is just as welcome.

Hope this has helped. Smile Oops, it seems I'm a rambler too! Blush

Oh by all means, ramble. The way you explained the exceptions was about along the same lines as what I was thinking of as arguments in my head. Also quite the good point that these things do not define who is a Roleplayer, simply if they are In Character at the moment or Out of Character.

It is just a rule of thumb..  by all means polish it up and extend and whatnot. I am not sure the OP is looking for an in-depth guide just what a quick scan can tell you.

In the end I RP with most people, even the God Mods .. I just adapt and fit in or exit. I'd suggest the handbook as a good place for "traits"?

Thank you sooo much for that thread!! Was to do one cause I'm really shy in game but I feel like I want to take a step further in FFXIV and role-playing is something I really envy. Found almost all the answer I was looking for here.

I have one more question tho...

English not my first language and I make mistake in sentence building and in orthography.... does people would find it rude ? I mean when I see people RP, the text is so clean and complete...

There are quite a few people who don't have English as their first language. If it would make you more comfortable, you can always drop a quick OOC note to let them know and more often than not people are very understanding, I've found. Smile

Generally most are okay in RP but the wider pve crowed can be really rude, I would take no notice of them.

In rp I think there are two main aspects above legability. I suffer dyslexia so even as an only English speaker I fail at legibility.

Speed, you may be slower to respond having to check your translation. Just let the person know. Often constructing in an editor let's you craft your response while I game telling them it is vpmming ooc.

Translations and indium, is going to introduce misunderstanding. So ooc just flag up if you think there is one. This for me us the real challenge and based more in different cultures than languages.

There is a whole post on here that ilwr'ran wrote on the whole aspect that is a worthwhile read.
