I've been wanting a bellydancer-like outfit as someone who plays a traveling performer. I'm not sure why the automatic assumptions seems to be SEX RP. The first thing that came to mind was courtesans. And if the OP thought that first thing, they're not going to be alone, for very obvious reasons. That's not insinuating that ONLY courtesan RPers are the ones interested in that outfit, just that it is the strongest association people will make with those kinds of outfits. Unfortunately, this is not something you can control. It's the result of repeated reinforcement from all kinds of media using that attire for that particular kind of appeal (and the design itself, frankly, being really obvious in its design intent in the first place). You really shouldn't be bothered by this. Neither courtesans nor ERPers nor anyone associated should be considered 'lesser beings' or looked down upon, so this should not be an offensive inference to make. Furthermore, you should have enough self-awareness to know how you're coming across given how you dress your character (or, ICly, how they dress themselves), unless, of course, a lack of self-awareness is a part of the character. You can be annoyed that people aren't making the associations you think they should be making, but you have about as much control over that as you do anyone else's thought patterns. The most you can do is correct people when they make incorrect assumptions based on your state of dress. And if you're wearing an outfit with that strong an association with that particular trade, you're going to be doing a lot of correcting, sorry to say. |

But while that might be the OPs first thought, it's not everyone's first thought or even intended manner of use. It could be a case of 'post history' (I mean look at poster titles) coming into play but I read it as being annoyed that while none of the other pictures had any sort of label or dialogue added to them, the OP specifically said COURTESAN RP for those outfits alone.
I believe in the other thread where these were shown there was talk of Blue Mage and jokes referencing Aladdin made as well. Martiallais Heuloix - Duty. Honor. Faith. Armand Tremaux - Justice, like lightning. "We're all snowflakes in a great blizzard." - Virara 2017 |

Of course it wasn't everyone's first thought. We're not a hive mind.
But, I mean... an outfit that bares legs, midriff, and shoulders is always going to get comments to that effect. And the artist's intent is actually largely irrelevant to this (though, again, I would argue that the intent is really bloody obvious). None of the other new outfits present the character as sexually available the way that one does. This should be a surprise to no one. If anything, you should be glad that this is the first instance on the site where someone pointed out that (really obvious) association. I was certainly thinking it when I saw it. I just knew better than to point it out, lest this exact conversation begin to play out. Really, I just find the objections to the comment to be quite silly at this point. If I put on the coliseum galerus I know exactly what kinds of comments I'll be getting. I'm not going to get in a huff and be offended by it. I'll accept what I get and move on. It's only when people are outright disrespectful that there is an issue, and quite frankly, what seems to be more the problem here to me is simply a lack of respect for what the courtesan profession stands for. If it weren't for the objections to that little comment my thoughts would simply begin and end with "yeah, I bet it will be" and nothing more. Now I'm just wondering how many people wear bikinis ICly outside of Costa Del Sol and are mystified by the propositions they receive. Now that's a curious thought... |

Let's not read too much into one passing sentence of the OP's post, yeah? (Even though admittedly, they could have phrased it better.) This thread is about how awesome these new armor sets look, and they all really do look fantastic.
I love the ones on the third row, I've been hoping for some more barbaric/brawler-looking armor, with a lot of fur and trappings, yessss. +_+ I'm pleased to see FFXIV's overall style moving toward a more gothic theme. |

(05-29-2015, 02:15 PM)Zarek Wrote: (I mean look at poster titles) All right... First off, my title is sarcastic, it's a way to poke fun at myself for my many posts about how I can't stand around people RPing physical stuff due to personal issues of my own (traumas of the past, bullying, abuse, whatchamacallit, take your guess, I'm not going to be specific). For the umpteenth time, sexual-related stuff disturbs me on a mental level and for that reason I had to take several turns in my life to preserve myself away from that (filtering signatures/avatars, not watching many movies, etc.). Does this reflect in me actually hating those who like to talk about sex, draw set, or even just RP sexual-related things (even not necessarily sex. Even just a kiss bothers me)? No. Absolutely not, because if that was the case I'd have to seal myself away from the world. I'll just look away from things that bother me, but keep my standpoint neutral on who does those things, otherwise I'd be doomed to hate the whole world. And at that point, I might as well get away from it entirely, if you know what I mean. But I like life, so I do not, thankfully. Do my feelings ban me from looking at revealing clothes and commenting them or even just talking about things such as courtesans, concubines, geishas, escorts, etc. etc. etc.? Nope. Or would you say people intollerant to lactose should never talk about cows or milk? Again, there is nothing wrong with RPing courtesans, or bellydancers, or ERP even. It doesn't make you a bad person to do that. And the way you react to me calling a dress "courtesan-like" makes me think that you do not share this opinion. That is your problem and not my own. Next time, you make the thread first and call each gear the way you like. I called it courtesan dress because I didn't even THINK there could be bellydancers RPers since you can't... well... bellydance in game. Good to know that there are, but it'll never be the first thing I'll think of when seeing that kind of dress. It'll be concubines. And looking at google, I'm guessing I'm not the only one, either. https://www.google.it/search?q=concubine...CAYQ_AUoAQ To be an interesting, intriguing, well-written character, there needs to be something to allow the audience to relate to them. That is what the problem is with who wants their character to be "perfect". Perfect characters will never be strong, and strong characters will never be perfect, because WE (those who read, who watch, who RP) are not perfect.

Well since we're getting off topic why stop now?
There's a fairly sizable gap between 'courtesan' and 'concubine' in practice. A courtesan (which hey, I had to learn this too) was actually skilled in MANY things, not just sex. But let's not get OFF off topic here. I mentioned your poster title for the same reason I mentioned MSQ commentary for someone else in another thread. It's known that you dislike that sort of thing so having you call it out (again other than anything else) kind of casts it in a negative light. Was I attacking you? No. I never said it was bad or made any sort of judgements, just an observation. It actually wasn't even my opinion I was clarifying. I was pointing out how -I- read what someone else said in response to your post since it was becoming an "omg I can't believe you read it this way that's different from me". No more, no less. As you said yourself there's lots of opinions around regarding what it could be, which I do believe I pointed out in my initial post but that wasn't the bit that was quoted sooooooo..... My sensibilities are not so tender and delicate that I would find issue with anything the OP included in their post. Not everything we read needs to be taken literally, let alone so seriously. (This post included.) Everyone has more important things to attend to rather than worrying about what total strangers think about some random outfit.

If there's one thing that makes people stand out in a community such as this it's the various distinct quirks that certain posters have. Blue often posts tongue-in-cheek comments regarding ERP and Telluride often criticises the Warrior of Light.
Stifle that and we're left with a rather bland atmosphere where people either don't bother posting at all or their input is lacking in individuality or flair. No rules were broken - it was a comment blown out of proportion. So let's move on, eh? As for the topic at hand...I quite like the look of the new gear. I'm actually in the process of forcing myself to level a GLD purely for the sake of gaining access to cosmetic attire. I loathe playing the role of a tank but luckily there's alternatives to doing dungeons... |
